Hi everybody ....

I am considering to colo my servers with someone at above.net (NYC). Well... I am pretty sure everybody know what and how good above.net is ... But for those who don't, here is a quick review about their facility ... Above.net is one of the best tier one NOC (in my opinion) in USA with its own private network backbone. It has over 497 direct peering agreements with major ISPs around the world (Europe, Asia, Australia, etc).

On the other hand, currently I am also thinking about colocating my servers at some other NOCs (tier-2 or even non tier?) using Yipes, Qwest, Level3, Aperian etc as their backbone.

Assume the bandwith charge I get is around X/GB (where $1<X<$2) for say ... 100GB prepurchase at these other NOCs (average bandwith measured)... I wonder, how much would you value above.net bandwith compare to these other NOCs .. i.e. at 2X/GB? 3X/GB (also, possibly average)? Does above.net facility worthy the extra bandwith costs? Will your customer be willing to pay extra for abovenet connectivity?

Please tell me what you think ....

It all depends on your target market.

If you're doing budget hosting, then no, it probably doesn't make sense to pay a higher price for the bandwidth. But if you're looking at hosting expensive/high-end sites, then it's possible that the better connectivity is worth paying extra money for. It really comes down to one question: can you pass the extra cost on to your clients?

Thanks for your reply ... Even at 2X/GB, I may still be able to get <$3/GB ... If I sell bandwith at around $3 or even $4/GB, I think that's pretty reasonable no matter what the target market is .. right?

The thing right now ... it's just more expensive for me to go with above.net (though not directly, but through someone that is already at above.net) ... wonder whether I can justify the price difference ... (about two to three times more expensive, rack charge also considered).

I think it really depends, as there are a number of good colo providers. Have you by chance looked into Globix?

Globix ... sure.... I even saw the NOC when I was looking for a good place for lunch in Chinatown (NYC) months ago ... :)

I got a quote from globix and above.net a while ago... Globix charges more per mbps (about 1.5 times more) than above.net .... Hence, I think it's better and more reasonable to go with above.net, either directly or indirectly ...
