Once something there sells, they'll sell another batch the next day. Not TOO much to worry about, unless people didn't decide to bid on a batch.

just having fun ;)
they have been selling them for a few weeks now
been watching em

Well I got one for just over $600. $629 to be exact. I'll let you know if it was a good deal when it gets here but they says its still new and not refurbished.
http://216.33.72.165/Actn/Cls/5009586.asp

I will be adding another 256 of ram and iccreasing the drive to either 18 or 30GB. So for 900-1000 I got a system that would me that much in the first month or two by renting the same specs as a dedicated.

I saw how everyone was freaking out over a $500 gateway tower, I can't believe people didn't do the same over these since they cost alot less to co-locate. Oh well, I saved money :D

We ordered a couple and have got one in, great deal some issues are:

1. Rack rails dont fit standard racks
2. you have to take the front bezel off everytime you want to push any button :) :(
3. Video port is resessed into the back to it can be a pain to get to because of the lip above it exp. if your trying to plug it in in a small space from the front.

Other than that if seems to be a great deal.

I thought from the description on ubid that it didn't come with the rack mounts anyway so I was thinking I had to buy some anyway. Anyone know how much the rack mount kit costs, I looked on dells site but can't find them.

So which kind of 80pin scsi connector did it have? SCA or something else?

how did they not fit ??

also what kind of rack was it going in ??

The rack mounts worked in other words it will screw into any rack just fine, but the sliding rails, which come for free, which you usually have to buy, dont fit standard racks. IE the sliding rails are the rails that enable you to slide the entire server out of the rack without unscrewing it from the rack

Aloha
so any ideas what they woud fit ??
I take it it really is not needed then (the sliding rails)
so if I send it off to a place soon I might as well not send the long box that contained the sliding rails ?? or will there be stuff they needed in there ???

how are they working so far then ?? do you have them going

also was curious I assume ya running linux/apache on em

did you do any of there bios updates or anything ??

Mahalos for answering

Sliding rails are nice if you have the money to spend on them. Unscrewing a server and pulling it out to do a simple thing like add memory is a pain. But usually sliding rails cost an extra ~$50. So if they're not included by default, I don't spend the extra money on 'em. They're nice, but not necessary.

They are over $100 from Dell, although I hear you can buy them from 3rd party. Don't know who though. Anybody?

Looks nice.

AFAIK, most places that do colo use single-rail racks. There isn't much point in using box racks unless you're hosting extra-big servers (extended rackmounts).

We have really long 1U servers on single rail racks with no problems.

Honu,

Did you ever figure out if the Dell control panel can be installed on them?

Honu
06-27-2001, 10:31 PM
Aloha
not yet
hope to do it this weekend or maybe today later

will keep ya posted though
I also am going to install apache kit on it
upgrade the memory to 512 and put in a 18 gig drive
looks like a 50 pin HD so have to take it apart again to double check though
if I get it up I have 2 static IP's so might be able to give ya the one static ip to check it out see if I do that or do the win2k thing might make it a dev box for asp stuff and mirror it out to another new dell app120 with dual 1gighz pIII and a gig of ram to run asp stuff
so I would have one dev box and a production box that could take over if I had a failure on the main box long enough to get the other box up

also curious to see teh new version of Plesk

I guess the win2k version of dellapp server has no dns handling though which is strange cause I could have sworn it was in the interface demo

I would like to buy some of these servers but am in The Netherlands and they only ship within the US.

Any suggestions??

Boksoft
06-28-2001, 10:47 AM
Ubid.com doesn't offer them anymore. I guess their inventory is empty now.

Shadowbreed, if you really want one, I was able to get another one, and willing to sell him and ship him to you.
But not at the Ubid price....PM me for more info.

Ubid now has IBM netfinity servers up for auction, but these are higher end systems and are prices two time higher on average.

shadowbreed
06-28-2001, 11:11 AM
I didn't mean exactly these servers just the servers they have in general, is there any way to get some sort of postal service that can forward them to The Netherlands?

Boksoft
06-28-2001, 11:30 AM
Most server firms will ship to Europe, just be prepared to pay high shipping costs.

shadowbreed
06-28-2001, 11:34 AM
I know they will and i know the costs but what i really need is some kind of forwarding service to the netherlands.

Because i want to be able to buy stuff from company's like ubid that only ship within the US.

cbaker17
06-28-2001, 12:02 PM
THe shipping from ubid is alraedy rediculous, its over 40.00 within the US for the slowest groud shipping.

MSW
06-28-2001, 12:53 PM
True, but even with the higher shipping, the cost of the machines can justify it.

Boksoft
06-28-2001, 01:16 PM
Absolutely, Dell servers are about 25% more expensive here in NL than in the US.

Honu
06-28-2001, 11:14 PM
Aloha
to ship to Maui was $89
what bites is I got to mail it back to colocate it
hehehhe
wanted to play with it first though
whheeeeeee

yeah I watch ubid everyday they may come back with more ya never know ;)=
maybe dell 120 soon
that would be cool

OH to ad a note the netfinity wher always there they are in a dif category the dell app servers were in Internet/Specialty are not enterprise (doesn't really matter but keep your eyes on the Internet/Specialty catetgory for the dells ???
