We dropped them after a performance problem I shouldn't mention details of, and we're in a dispute with them over it to this day. I would never buy their service again.

Which is unfortunate, since they inherited the old Digex network, where we had been a customer since November 1995.

When RS carried me over them, the network performance was below par... but now I'm routed over MFN/Abovenet, nothing but clear sailing :).

well actually, I have seen a good peering from ALGX network (it's a bit slow at 2..3PM), but I am sure it really depends from your location and their peering

ok, well when i used to be with ILAN Game Servers, we used ALGX for our east coast servers, ALGX was always having problems with routers or peering or some thing. Pings wouldn't be that stable and some times IP's would go down and be unpingable for a couple hours to a day.
bah... NAC is better for East Coast

The old digex.net network was awful in the mid-late 1990s, poor peering and high latency due to some link oversubscription.

However, under Allegiance management, the algx.net backbone performs very well, with noticeably greater uptime and lower latency than others such as AT&T, SprintLink, etc.

I know that it has been the case for the last six months or so. A year or so earlier they were merging their own network with the newly acquired Digex one and there were some major problems with that. But in 2003, algx.net is one of the better performing tier 1 networks, no doubt about it.

I would stay far away from ALGX, the stories I could tell (if we were not in disputes with them also).

I had the opposite experience in the 90's. Their rapid expansion of connectivity in Pittsburgh (2xDS-3 at the time) gave us a good performance reputation early on.

If their process of merging algx.net and digex.net involves shutting down Digex nodes and not telling anyone, then I'd say that wasn't a very good plan. They apparently left themselves with very poor connectivity and/or capacity in at least one city...

That may be indeed so. I just know that here in DC / northern VA the connectivity via Algx at this time is very good, and in the mid-late 1990s Digex connectivity out of Baltimore was quite bad.

It could be indeed so that they shut down some smaller tier 2 city Digex nodes such as Pittsburgh. But, the algx network is the former digex.net, not what used to be algx.net before it acquired digex (which was definitely not a good performing network by any means).
