Looking around and it seems AMD chips run hot : )
Mines a 2000 in a 2u case with a Thermaltake Slim Volcano 8se (which kicks ass on the stock cooler that came with the chip BTW) and is averaging 52 degrees Celsius 125F. Everyone I've talked to seems to think that's fine. True?
Also what temp should the chip not exceed? AMD lists the chips up to 85 Celsius (which is insane) so I picked 64 c to shut the machine down and 60 for warnings.
I expect when it gets dropped in a rack the average will go up a few degrees. Anybody got experience with this kind of stuff? Stories? Recomendations?
Thanks,
Iggy

From my experience with my PC, both of my AMD processors, a Duron 900 and Athlon XP 1800, ran ~50 degrees C (~120 degrees F). I also thought it seemed hot until I read the processor specs and decided it should be fine under 60 degrees C.
From my understanding, AMD clocks their processors a little higher than Intel to get more out of them. This could be why they run warm.

My old Duron 1GHz last year ran on average of 45 degrees C under heavy loads. My P4 2.4GHz runs at 32 degrees C under heavy loads. And yes AMD does clock their processors higher than Intel which is why they have so many problems and why I'll never be using one again.

Get a clue
Clock for clock, Intel is higher than AMD.

I have never had a problem with AMD processors, care to list all of these problems you have had? Beside me I have 5 AMD boxes and 2 intels.

AMD XP Should run under 90 C and 50 C is plenty cool. :)
Well. I fried one in the rack and it made me sad (stock fan). Hadn't ever had a problem with AMD up to this point but hadn't attempted to use one in a 2u either. Got a 1600 running in a 4u that's been going strong for over a year and a few scattered in workstations that have never had problems.
So what's the max temp recommendation? Anyone have a favorite sink that'll fit in a 2u? The Volcano seems to be doing fine but I have the fear...
Thanks,
Iggy

max temp is 100 Degrees Celcius, then the chip is basically fried.
Holy #@^%! Do you actually have or let any of these chips run up into the 70s or beyond?
Added a 120mm fan and drilled some holes and now it's riding at 42C. I'm comfortable with the margin of error and unknowns.
Thanks for all the replys.

my athlon 1.2ghz cpu died yesterday - cpu fan died - cpu died :|
That's the big issue, at least for me anyway. With the P4 it just clocks down rather than just burn up. Loose a fan and you run a good chance of loosing the CPU. 1U and AMD don't mix, at least not cheaply (with a $600+ chassis maybe).

partly my fualt.. :\
I didnt have a case fan(s) and my pc case sit on floor near the heat vent - not much air circulation down there.

My AMD2000XP runs at 42, up to 51 under load though. (C)
