Do you think we can get the limit on the amount of characters that are in a private message raised a bit? 1000 seems low to me ... every message I have written recently had to be broken down into two messages. What do you guys think?

agree... sometimes it's annoying and even frustrating trying to cut down my message here and there to get it just under 1000 characters :)

cheers,

Agreed and upgraded to 2000 characters :)

The only thing we'll need to keep an eye out on is the size of the MySQL DB which will increase with this..... But 2000 should be more than sufficient for everyone's needs :)

Thanks BC,

Is there a way in VB to check every ones PM's and say for 30days back or 60days back or more clear them out so the database does not get to big.. Could put this in the rules or some thing that every 30 or 60 days you will delete all old PM's?

Just a idea for you..

AFAIK vB doesn't have this capability (though we could submit it to their wishlist). Theoretically we could hook up a cron job to do this for us (just access the MySQL DB and clear out the PM tables every x days) but I'm not sure if this is compatible with vB.

We're not too worried about the DB size considering we still have quite a few GB left on the hard drive, but I'm interested to see what kind of impact it'll have on the DB, that's all. ;)

I should also remind/point out the fact that directly below the 'textarea' box where you type your message in, there is a small link called

[check message length]

It's a JScript validator which checks for the no. of characters you've typed in the textbox. Very useful if you're worried about going over :D

Thanks, and enjoy....

Well... it shouldn't be really noticeable, seeing as there are hundreds of new posts each day, and Tim Greer is still lurking with his 10,000 char posts. :D

Besides, now that we don't have the 2000 char limit, I'm sure we won't feel the need to type as much. We just liked to see how far we could push the limits (I.E. can I make my message EXACTLY 1000 chars and still have it make sense? :D ).

I don't think it'll make PM use skyrocket, and it might even cut it down a bit (as someone said they have to split PMs over two or more messages). Until you get to multiple-millions of records, the db should perform very well.
