Anyone surprised that Yahoo has lost ground to Google? Still, Yahoo doesn't realize that much of this could be traced right to their 'paid listing' for commercial sites..

Since they started doing that a few years ago, I wouldn't think it has much to do with it. And for the past few months, Yahoo has displayed Google-supplied results more prominently than those paid directory listings (for which you have to click the "directory results" link), which reduces their effect to the user.

I think the article hit pretty accurately on the reasons: Google pages are lighter and faster-loading; Yahoo's are, for those visiting just to make a search, cluttered and slow. Add to that, Google's been adding other services like news search, image search, "Froogle," etc. -- beginning to function a bit more like a Yahoo-style portal but by offering the best of both a portal and a search engine without compromising performance or search quality to the extent that Yahoo and others do.

And of course Yahoo's site still gets substantially more traffic than Google, from those using other services besides search.

the only thing i wish they would do with google, is make it "home page material" the only reason yahoo is my homepage is because it has the news and all that on there.. so at a glance, its there.

i am thinking of making my own "homepage" and doing it that way

That's why I've been using my.myway.com as my home page lately. Prominently placed Google search box, fast-loading low graphic pages, and easily customizable layout. Their focus is made clear by the fact that they include a message at the top of each page telling you how long it took for the page to load -- I'd like to be able to compare that to Yahoo or MSN!

http://news.google.com/ It is getting better. The news stories are selected by software reviewing spidered new sources, so sometimes the choices are kind of strange. On the other hand, that means you get a broad range of news sources which can't be bad.

Yep, I love that site. It's my home page too.. :D

And back to the topic. Goole is clean, simplistic, and provide accurate search results. Nothing more I could want.. Google > Yahoo anytime. ;)

i personally use http://www.hotbot.com/ as my home page now days, prominently because i like searching all the main crawler based search engines from the one place ;P .. hotbot really did do a good thing when they changed it into a meta search engine like this a few months ago.

seems everybody is lining up to try and compete more with googles dominance, alltheweb changed there serp's/look, msn changed there serp's, yahoos going to get rid of the clutter(switch to inktomi?! end of year, spammier results, not good imo.), altavista changed there look.. but it all comes down to relevance of a search query and that's why google is #1 :/

HotBot, are you crazy? HAHA

Google is THE BEST website on the Internet. Fastest loading, yet most useful. I use it EVERY DAY.

hotbot's good :)
especially for the field i'm in
doing manual ranking checks of clients to 4 main crawler based search engines from the one location (hotbot) is nice.
google also started liking hotbot since this change, back upto pagerank 9.. when it was apparently pagerank 5? with the old "hotbot" they had a while ago.

who needs a google homepage? Just install the google toolbar (if you use IE anyway) and then no matter what page you are on you can easily search :)

Been doing that ever since it came out, it is the best thing ever made.

boogle.com is my homepage... Just like the quotes and I use google so much that it just made sense to use it as my home page. To date this is the best search engine IMO.

Yahoo sucks big time. Ever try submitting URL's to Yahoo? Even after all the screwing around to submit sites, they only accept a small percentage.

Keep on Googlin :)

I have Google installed as a module in the CMS I use. Along with my own newsfeeds (CNN. Sports Illustrated, Etc) and even the Weather Channel, all customizable for any region.

Why go somewhere else for my homepage and settle for less than what I really want?...;)
