They've been doing that for a while now.. students and teachers from universities/colleges here who are enrolled in MSDN-AA can just copy whatever Microsoft software they wish to have from the university and install it onto their own personal computer without being in violation of piracy.
The key is it only gives you a "right to use" and not an actual license. If you read the accompanying EULA you'll see you're only allowed to use it for academic/educational purposes. So in this case using it as a trial to see if it's worth buying is alright, if you use it to make homework assignments that's allowed too. If you use it to develop commercial software then you're in breach of the license agreement.
This year Microsoft started a program here to which students of any accredited school can sign up for to download XP Pro, Visual Studio, Office etc for about $40. Unlike a regular license you're also allowed to install the same copy with the same key onto more then one computer at the same time (for example, on your home pc and the one in your dorm) but it's only a "right to use", not a license.
Someone just didn't do their background checks and wanted to make a catchy headline :)
