Annette 08-09-2000, 12:18 AM Linux/Unix? Try freshmeat.net. They have loads of stuff like this, either CGI or php-based, most of which is GPL/freeware and so could be altered to fit your needs.

Annette 08-09-2000, 02:47 PM Eddie, it depends on what type of site you're going to have. Will it allow for real time updates to a central database, if someone posts review? Or will all reviews be vetted prior to release? Will you need a link from hosting plans to reviews and vice versa for each host? Does it need to be CGI? php/mySQL?
I know there are thousands of files at freshmeat, and it can be hard to get through them. :) But if you narrow the scope a bit, you can easily eliminate many of the results there that don't match your particular need, and maybe find one that does exactly what you want without a lot of hacking around to make it just so. I've seen scripts up that allow for things like movie reviews, which might be suitable with a bit of customization.

FlashTechnics 08-09-2000, 02:54 PM I don't mind whether it be cgi or php/mysql im more confident with cgi but i can work with php and mysql. Id like it to be as automated as possible. I'd like the reviews to appear instantly but also a function so i can delete them if i do not approve of language etc etc used in the post. so it would post a copy to the site and possibly a copy of the review to me. i'm also looking to do something similar to http://www.bigbytes.co.uk with the response times and things like that, how much downtime a website as had etc etc. I'm currently searching around for a good freeware forum, ive been looking at ubb but the features for the freeware version are limited so im searching through the hack sites for features.

Eddie, if you're looking for some decent freeware forums (either CGI or PHP/MySQL) do a search at http://www.hotscripts.com and search for 'discussion boards'. You should turn up a few gems.
Michael_Bray 08-10-2000, 02:30 AM I am using a custom one I wrote in PHP/MySQL - it handles the reviews, packages, searching etc.
I was using Links SQL from Gossamer-Threads previously, but you'll find that a custom script will do the job best.
I'd give you my script - but it would need to be edited to work with other people - and I don't have the time to do that unfortunatly.

I guess it depends on how much changes you want made and whether the pre-existing system suits your needs fully.
It also depends on how much you know of Perl/CGI and PHP - if you know enough then you should be able to change things around a bit. However, if the boards are under GPL or Open Source licences then you might need to be send your changes in to the author/programmer of the board (as part of the agreement) so that everyone else benefits.

Vladislav 08-10-2000, 01:20 PM Flash,
Check out http://www.gossamer-threads.com for their dbman package. These guys know how to write code -- their software is extremely well written (I know, as I used to be partners with one of their guys on another project and have used their software extensively).
DBMan is available in both SQL and flat-text versions and in my experience has been amazingly easy to customize.
I hope this tidbit helps :)
Sincerely,
Vladislav Davidzon <davidzon@thinkhost.com> :-)

Michael_Bray 08-11-2000, 08:15 AM If you want to discuss using my software for your site (webhostarea.com - you can see what it does), then send me an email and we can discuss it.
Its PHP/MySQL - its easy to learn, I used to only use Perl but converted to this.
