Report for www.burst.net [66.96.192.201]
Analysis: IP packets are not moving from network "Sprint/United Information Service" to network "Network Operations Center Inc." at hops 12-13. Connections to HTTP port 80 are being rejected.
They are not answering my emails and their site is down. Seems there is something wrong with there NOC.

Domenico 06-14-2001, 06:00 AM Well, seems like they are up again...
BurstNET 06-14-2001, 12:28 PM Our data center IS NOT down. Just one rack was down.
We had another problem with a UPS system last night about 6am EST on one single rack.
We replaced it temporarily with a smaller UPS at that time.
We just replaced it with a larger new one a few minutes ago.
Unfortunately to replace such, the whole rack needs to get powered down again.
Needless to say, we are pulling any other UPS from this same batch (two bad so far) from usage ASAP.

MrGoodHost 06-14-2001, 12:48 PM Damn , I sure wouldn't want to work with this kind of pressure ! Havin my laundry out on the line for every stinkin thing that happens !
BurstNET 06-14-2001, 01:18 PM You hit the nail right on the head with that comment :-)
This somewhat explains how I react sometimes to comments people make here...heh

Domenico 06-14-2001, 05:37 PM Yup, I agree on that too.
Sometimes people are to fast with bad coments but then again sometimes they are right.
Oh well, pressure is not allways a bad thing and from who's eyes are you looking at a problem anyways?
I guess it is never good enough in this time we are living. Competition is so big these days so customers are more king than ever.
Sean, I saw an old post with the same UPS problems so are those UPS failing the same as those other ones that went down?
MrGoodHost 06-14-2001, 06:47 PM they never call you a pianist but screw-up just once and .....
I dunno but everytime I made a mistake or a script took a dump on my sites I sure wouldn't want to be publicly chastised for it .
I also notice that basically there are about 5 providers that are watched very closely by the board , funny these seem to be the top 5 providers in terms of services vs price . Some of these providers have some pretty kickin NOC's with tons of money and brainpower , yet they seem to be every bit as susceptiable to downtime as some of the less financially endowed services .
I want to throw this out there to the providers and it may be in place already at some of them , but when you go down wouldn't it make life ten times easier to have a network status page somewhere for you to post the current issues so customers could login and find out its a bad UPS on one rack that should be back up in an hour .
It seems this board is a good place to go ask why somebody is down which of course looks really bad for the provider , why not communicate to your customers privately via a network status page , your customers would be happier knowing whats going on and you might not get slammed for every minute of downtime in a public forum .
and yes I did have to look up how to spell susceptiable !
MrGoodHost, I agree. When I was with VServes on a shared hosting reseller account, that's something that they were really good at -- informing clients on any future downtimes (even 30 minutes downtimes) because of maintenance work to be performed, etc. and if there is any untoward downtime, they immediately send e-mail informing their clients what happened and what exactly caused the problem and the expected time the server will be back up. If for some reason the downtime last longer (happened once) they make sure to update their clients of the progress of their work. This way you know what's going on and will also be able to give updates to your clients. But if you don't know what's going on, it's just natural to ask what and why it happened.
Sean, if you'll set up a network status page, I'm sure that'll be the first site we go to if there is a network problem with Burst and that will greatly minimize postings on this board related to this. Better yet is if you can set up an e-mail advisory system similar to VServers.

Such are the joys of having lots of clients.
MrGoodHost 06-14-2001, 09:24 PM I wasn't really directing that post at Burst , I was directing it at all the ded providers that frequent the board . Anybody leasing servers anywhere would benefit from a network status message even just a quick message on a static page . That way if it is a network issue , everybody has the opportunity to be informed , if it is only a single rack or maybe a router that only affects a limited number of customers there is no additional work of figuring out who is affected and who is not . If your box appears to be down , check the Network Status page , if there is no message there , then email support and ask whatsup .
Ameritech does it but they suck at it , email will go down for hours but yet the net status page claims the email server is up and fine . The only time they seem to post anything is scheduled down time and when http goes down for more than a few hours .

Exactly. Like that which is brown and smelly, downtime happens. And it happens to everyone-large and small. Rich or poor.
MrGoodHost 06-15-2001, 01:06 PM My apologies Phoenix , I actually did not look it up myself , my tech and I were argueing over the spelling and he looked it up and spelled it to me , I have been setup ! LOL
