View Full Version : FDC Servers Review
AcuNett 04-03-2003, 09:53 PM We've been with FDC servers since December. We currently have 5 servers with them. Hope this review gives some insight on them
Customer Support - Excellent
Technical Support - Great
Speed - Excellent
Pricing - Excellent
Uptime - Good
CS:
Customer Support is great, Petr is always there to help you and trying to fulfull any request you have. They are honest and always willing to help.
TS:
From what I can tell there are a couple of advanced techs. Recently they have hired more staff members. I've seen a number of new names popup when I submit tickets. Communication used to be mediocre, a few emails being lost/not answered. Took them a while to reply, especially in emergencies (system restores etc). Hopefully with there new ticket system communication will be much better. I submitted a ticket a few minutes ago which was answered in a matter of seconds.
Reboots are fast, usually under 5 minutes. System restores are free which is a big plus
SP:
They use YIPES as primary and COGENT as secondary/backup. Ping times are extroadinarly fast, at least from where I am. However, it is poor from Chicago, where the DC is. For some reason people in Chicago are being routed to Washington D.C. and back.
PR:
Pricing is the best you'll find. Some of you may be wondering, "How can they offer so much bandwidth for so little?" Well.... they just can.
Uptime:
So far this year, there has been two scheduled maintenances which lasted under an hour each (if I remember correctly). Other than that, unplanned downtimes has happened once. This was two weeks ago when they suffered DDOS attacks that lasted two days. The network was up and down during that time. Downtimes usually lasted only an hour, then being up for around 6. Sometimes there are network blurps which last for a couple minutes. This doesn't happen very frequently. I experience around once a month, but of course I don't monitor the network 24/7 every minute
ArthurDavis 04-03-2003, 09:56 PM Kudos!! :D
music 04-03-2003, 10:27 PM I am in chicago and been in the FDC data center,
nice place with nice people, they work hard and are trying to make it. If it is not "mission critical" they offer a decent service for a great price.
I think that posting pictures on the website and giving tours is great.

Technical support/customer support. I disagree. I haven't been happy with them lately. they were good till 2 weeks ago.
FW-Mike 04-04-2003, 02:32 AM God stop tempting me to sign up! I know better! :)
Anyone have a reseller act with them?
AcuNett 04-04-2003, 05:56 PM What kind of problems have you been having Trance?

Actually, according to both of our monitoring services, FDC was down for a grand total of 17 hours during that week of DDOS attacks. (Mostly up and down a lot)
They have been good to me, mostly, but I think I would rather go with a more reliable, trusted company.
Cirtex 04-04-2003, 08:48 PM i kind of like FDC and i think most people just telling people they suck so people wouldnt sign up with FDC's plans which give you unbelievable amount of bandwidth and storage and other services
Cirtex 04-04-2003, 08:51 PM and umm dude your site maxispace.com
loads slowly....on a cable modem
Cirtex 04-04-2003, 08:52 PM nice reseller plans
Techark 04-04-2003, 09:29 PM
Aren't you reselling FDC dedicated servers?
AcuNett 04-04-2003, 09:30 PM I'm not reselling their servers, if you were referring to us. eprodigy, there were different subnets that were under attack. I think our .96 and .104 subnets were one of the lucky ones.
mainarea 04-04-2003, 09:34 PM Monte - I think they colo there...
- Matt
Techark 04-04-2003, 09:41 PM OK my apologies for being wrong.
RobTheGolfer 04-04-2003, 11:59 PM Yes, colocate there. Very happy with how they treat our boxes as well. :)
RobTheGolfer 04-05-2003, 12:00 AM edit, double post. :)
Cirtex 04-05-2003, 12:02 AM Yep, I might just go with FDC's reseller plans

Its on a server at FDC.. So you are just proving my point - If FDC didn't have outrageous amounts of bandwidth, they would have no customers! (although the site is just fine loading for others)
I lost customers because of all of FDC's downtime.
(The stupid part is, a lot of them switched to FDC reseller, which suffers the same downtime!)
Just saying, in the future I will go elsewhere for servers.

His site most likely is down because of the server itself, rather then the network. They haven't had any network problems in the last few days.

My site?
I understand it hasn't been down since the large DDoS attack. Our server, personally, has been up for almost 2 months now. (without reboot or major service failure).
Our monitor checks our website as well as fdcservers.net, as well as the FDC reseller server "Imperial".
Our site and fdcservers.net results match up, Imperial does not, it has experianced server issues not related to the network.
RobTheGolfer 04-05-2003, 12:43 AM Right, as I said ************** may be down. That doesn't mean their network is. Maybe the server was just experirencing high load for a minute or two.
eprodigy 04-05-2003, 12:51 AM "high load for a minute or two" - The duration of the downtime has never been just a minute or two, except during small blurbs of downtime (which don't bother me). The downtime I am referring to (over a week ago since it has happened) has always lasted 1-2 hours minimum.
We just added a Cognent backup to our server, so hopefully that will improve reliability. But we will go back to DedicatedNow for our future servers, most likely. (FDC was kind of an experiment)
RobTheGolfer 04-05-2003, 01:28 AM I am talking about when Mr. Hoobastank said your website was slow. I think you confused my last few posts. No problems. :)
eprodigy 04-05-2003, 02:02 AM Ah :) Alright
klumber 04-05-2003, 07:34 AM Ticket system?? Responding in seconds?
I'm their customer several months and I didnt know they started tickets.
On which link??
eprodigy 04-05-2003, 11:40 AM Any email sent to support@fdcservers. net becomes a ticket.
There ticket system is at fdcservers .net/helpdesk (remove the space/their URL is banned..)
I personally have nothing specifically against FDCservers, though I wouldn't recommend you use it for webhosting. They use Yipes and Cogent, I don't think u can get much lower than that.
Cirtex 04-05-2003, 11:55 AM why is FD C Server banned>>!
eprodigy 04-05-2003, 12:26 PM Most likely because it is the root of a lot of arguements around here. There are dozens of topics about them, mostly negative.
Cirtex 04-05-2003, 12:36 PM ...ya, but it could be just the same person registering different accounts on different IPs making threads and complaining about them

I don't think that's a valid reason to ban someone. I think it has more likely to do with braking rules. Or it might have to do with excessive rudeness, like they are towards their (potential) customers. Might want to read this http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=128119
AcuNett 04-05-2003, 12:43 PM Why are Yipes and Cogent bad for web hosting?
I got a server from FDC two months ago.
So far, I'm happy with them (despite the DDOS downtimes). Customer service is good (emails replied pretty quick). My site uses 1000 Gig of bandwith per month. For $99 a month, that's a really good price.
And lately, the connection speed is ok, and no downtimes.
:)
NationHosts 04-06-2003, 12:03 AM www.fdcservers.net sure it banned?
eprodigy 04-06-2003, 01:30 AM hmm doesnt seem to be :)
I saw Acunett posts with just the right number of * to be fdcservers.net
anile8 04-06-2003, 04:47 AM Add my stamp of approval.
FDC's pricing, support, and service in general has been great.
You can even email the owner, Petr, and he'll get back to you within the hour.
chrisbond 04-06-2003, 12:02 PM I have to say my experance with fdcservers was not very good, i've just cancelled the contract with them.
