If memory serves me correct, Genuity (part of Level3) used to go by a different name, a name that was around since the beginning of the internet as we know it today. Anybody remember what it was called? (I do, I'm seeing if anybody else does...or at least I think I do heh).

Genuity was GTE Internetworking and before that is was BBN.
BBN (AS1) is the name you are looking for.
Bolt, Beranek, & Newman built ARPAnet.
If you do traces through Genuity you'll still see some hops as bbnplanet.

They're right, although technically Genuity was always Genuity. GTE Internetworking started their own ISP initiative. They decided to grow through acquisition, so they bought both Genuity and BBN. They then rolled it up and called it GTEi, then they changed the name back to Genuity. They consolidated onto the AS number 1, which was always BBN Planet's ASN. Now, if you do a whois -h whois.arin.net 1, you'll see Genuity where BBN always was.

BBN... good old creators of the internet! (If you don't already know, BBN was the company commissioned by the government to build ARPANET)
