Hey,
I've been considering buying a 128 bit SSL certificate to offer shared SSL hosting.
The client would benifit from having:
ASP
ASP.NET
PHP
MySQL
MS Access
MS SQL
(All hosted on a Windows Server)
for development purposes. The client would be allowed to access their site either by:
https://client.mydomain.com
https://mydomain.com/client
*OR* a parked domain
and would also have FTP access to their space.
The costs are quite affordable but before I spend $500 - $700 a year on this venture I would like to know how many people would be interested in this type of thing?

Shared SSL would be useful to many, but if it's that crucial to sites, they would usually get a dedicated IP and buy a SSL cert of their own. Anyway, it's a good move to offer shared SSL.. be sure to put that down on your package features! :D

$700 for an SSL cert ...?

Pretty expensive :/ You'd only _really_ need it for doing creditcard transactions, etc. Yeah?

You don't need it for anything. You don't need a bullet proof vest when you go undercover for the FBI, but chances are it's best to have one ....

Good point :) I guess sometimes it is better to have it, but it is pretty expensive VeriSign -- $895 for 1 year...

Wow... It never ceases to shock me that price. My *wildcard* certificates cost less than that!
I'd hate to think what they charge for one of those...

Hmm yeah im interested to know. How did you come up with the $500-$700 quotation?

Oh, I'm not saying he's wrong... I'm just saying I find the price shocking.

Well I came to the price of $500 - $600 a year is because I would still have to pay for webhosting on a windows box to offer MS SQL & MS Access, as for the SSL certificate this is only one years certificate.
The only way to cut costs on SSL is if I was to use shared SSL my self but that would pretty much suck.

Oh, you were including that... I see :). Are you sure you need to pay the premium for webhosting on a windows box? Most people these days IMHO are looking for unix (i.e. linux) hosting, and MySQL or PostgreSQL seems to cover needs.
I have all the LiNUX requirements with Darktides.NET (http://darktides.net), which supports SSL and many other things that are useful.
Im just waiting for their Windows boxes to be setup so I can have a better hosting experience.

Better? Well, to each their own I suppose :).

TuX is an ASP freak... he is into Windows hosting more so than Linux, which we do not offer, so I point him here... I see him looking for a Windows/Game server in requests now.
Must be pretty serious about this.
