I currently have a website where each page is a PHP script and a few MySQL queries. I will have about 1750 users who will visit the site om average twice a week and have between 10-15 page views per visit from Aug-Dec. (45000 page views per week) What I would like to know is which would be better...
A Shared hosting package that runs...
Dual Sun UltraSparc II 300MHz Processor
OS=Sun Microsystem's Solaris 7
Can't find cache info
1,024 MB of Random Access Memory (RAM)
Can't find ethernet info
I will guess at max 250 users per machine
Or a Dedicated that runs
Single Pentium 233 MHz
OS=Custom Red Hat Linux 5.2 **
64 KB cache
32 MB RAM
100 MBps Bay Networks Ethernet Card
Just Me!
I know guys like pwer and more power, but I am looking for something inexpensive! It is possible I could upgrade the dedicated to a Celeron 633, 64MB but would do this if the proposed dedicated could not handle what I need. Both the original plans included the same bandwidthm which is enough for my needs. Please let me know what you think...

If these are the only two options, I would go for Shared hosting package. How can you stand a 32MB RAM?
Bad:
- Might get kick out for being a poplular site.
Good:
1GB RAM
Dual processors
What else can you ask for?

Just hope that there aren't 250 other high resource sites on that shared server.
The dedicated does look a little wimpy. (32 Megs of RAM?)

So 250 people sharing 1,024MB RAM is better then my own 32? I was curious, if it turn out to be horrible then I could go to 64 as mentioned, would that make a difference?
Yeah and getting kicked out for being a popular site is a drawback. :dgrin:

stat_man: The problem is the RAM that just running the system takes up. You're going to be using most of that 32MB just to run the system processes as well as Apache, mySQL, etc. But each time you add a new user, the amount of RAM the system takes up doesn't double. So that's why the shared server is probably a better bet.

But I don't need 32MB per user obviously. So ig I got 64MB, 32 could cover my system and that leaves the other 32MB for my site. Does that sound reasonable? Just 1 site, I will never do any hosting for anyone else. Just run my little PHP scripts that touch my MySQL database.

It depends on how high traffic/resource intensive your site is. You should be able to host a decent sized site with 64MB, as long as it's not too resource intensive.
Just out of curiosity, how much would you be paying for that dedicated box?

if I got the 64MB one I would be paying $99/month

stat_man that dedicated packages looks like a ***** server. Stay away, you are asking for trouble. The shared packages looks like one of my servers, but we have 2gigs of ram.
I would say go with the Sun Shared, but be weary you might get booted because of over usage.

I just wanted to ask a question about servers, I didn;t want to get into a long discussion abotu *****. But since it was brought up, I have been with CI for 2 years now and another account with CommunitechNet. Big double wammie hah? Well anyway, i have recived excellent service from both companies all along, so I have no issue staying with either of them.
Yes the dedicated is with *****, I would give them 5 stars based on my experience with them! I know this is not the popular or hip thing to say, but it is my experience. (funny thing I didn't even have any problems back in Jan 2000, I must be lucky!)
