What do people think of using (internet)magazines/(local)press for getting good returns on advertising.

I just looked at a couple of their prices and the cost runs into thousands, anyone got rough figures for expected returns?

I'm looking at starting up and I'm trying to get some Ideas on startup costs which include some initial promotion I would consider once I got the site sorted properly.

If you're only getting started I would advice going immidiately with magazines spending all your buget, <<EDIT>> however you should try to find some web directories, and webmaster web sites <<EDIT>>, that doesn't charge a few thousands as a minimum.

here are a few web directories to get you started:

It depends on what you are going after. If you want to attract local business (which is an excellent idea that too many start-ups overlook!), then advertise in the local papers.

- don't just advertise in the "computer" or "high tech" section of the local paper, consider the "business" section.

- do you want to target specific sectors? if so, advertise in their publications.

- targeting is essential now. Placing an ad in Wired WILL get your company name in front of tons of people, however, it doesn't gurantee you any returns!

Some of the leading magazines also offer free listing sections at the back of the magazine. This will at least give you some limited exposure to a potential reader.
