Kathy 06-11-2001, 10:38 PM Is anyone else having data packet loss since last night? My server was down for several hours last night....They said they were replacing a gigabit card in one of the core routers...
Since my server has come back up, we've had constant problems with data packet loss and server time outs.
Is it just my server?
Dylan 06-11-2001, 11:48 PM If the card has been replaced, I think you have to wait a good couple of hours for it to kick in.
When did your server come back up?
How many hops away are you from your server?
Also, have you tried rebooting your server?
RackMy.com 06-11-2001, 11:59 PM Have you contacted Catalog.com yet, they could probably give you better information :)
Kathy 06-12-2001, 12:22 AM Yes, I've contacted catalog.com. Sent email. Left voice mail. Several times in the last 24 hours. No explanation. No replies.
It was over 24 hours ago that the server came back up with the explanation they had been replacing this gigbit card in the crashed router.
Since then, my domains load slowly. Then aLthough, the sites can appear to load normally, the ability to reply (in our vbulletin forums) isn't easy. Submit...wait....STOP....Submit...wait....
ABout 3 out of 4 times the reply doesn't happen. But, weird thing is that those who have subscribed to the thread...get email that someone has replied...but nothing is there. The system emails before the data hits the database apparently.
We've even had some members manage to post a reply but only part of it is there.
It affects cgi driven applications too. We send out birthday greetings using cgi bignosebird....and it times out with the usual dozen email addresses.
So, yes, I've asked catalog.com why we are continuing to have problems and they said they would call me back this afternoon. No phone call.
I figured if it was data packet loss on a network, I wouldn't be the only one affected. This is why I posted here...to locate other catalog.com customers that had their server out last night to ask if they were still affected today.
talash 06-12-2001, 12:37 AM Hi Kathy,
I am also unable to reach my server :(
I host with catalog.com too.
God knows whats the problem. All packets are lost and now i am going to page them.
Lets keep finger crossed and hope for the best.
Regards
Abhishek

ROFL! Obviously you've never had a dedicated server with catalog.com! Whenever there's a problem, no one seems to be around. Their tech support for the most part is 9-5, and if there's a problem from 9-5, no one is ever there. You can either wait on hold and be hung up on, or leave a voicemail message that might get returned days later (if you're lucky).
Hyper Tech 06-12-2001, 02:09 AM How is tech support when they do answer? Are they helpful? How fast can you get a reboot? Is there at least one technician there you can count on? I'm considering getting a RaQ there to help train our new technicians on.
talash 06-12-2001, 04:12 AM Hi,
My server with Catalog is back online. Seems to be working fine now :)
It was definitely a network problem. My server is up since last 3 days when i last rebooted it.
Regards
Abhishek

Does it really make a difference? Personally, I wouldn't be very impressed if they had a very helpful technician, but it took him 5 days to answer a question!
DHWWnet 06-12-2001, 10:17 PM We have nothing but good things to say about Catalog.com , we've been with them since october last year and we have a few co-Located servers, their techs are the most helpful. :)
Of course BurstNET is also one of the best dedicated and co-Location place out there.
I'd say both NOC's are what I call --the best bang for your buck--
cheers,
elijah john
Kathy 06-12-2001, 10:22 PM Elijah? Were your servers not affected by the core router crash on sunday night and the subsequent bad repair that left the network with over 36 hours of data packet loss?
My site was almost un-usable for 40 hours...from the crash to the data packet loss. This on top of their other recent outage (from the OKC storm) isn't acceptable to me.
DHWWnet 06-12-2001, 10:46 PM Hello
yes, they were inaccessible for quite sometime...
i've heard that they are constantly being attacked...
cheers,
elijah john
deeboy 06-14-2001, 07:42 PM i bolted from catalog about 5 months ago, like they say 9-5 tech support and they put my box up with giving me a heads up- needless to say it got hacked the same day. i think they set it up with "hackme" as the password ;)
just my 2cents

Michael-MS 06-22-2001, 11:13 PM We've been with Catalog for a while. Many of their support techs are very helpful.
We had to transfer all of our files to a new server because of a hacking attempt and they helped us step by step with the process. Our server was never down during the whole process! :) :) :)
Overall, their support is about average. It really all depends on which guy is on duty at the time (I'm not going to mention names) ... Also, there's someone there 24-7 now.
Our servers have never been down for more than an hour at a time and it's never more than once a month. (Maybe we got lucky) The only bad thing that I have to say about them, is when there is a problem that effects all of their servers, they seem to disappear, but the problem still gets resolved. :)
