My Dell 600SC has arrived and I want to upgrade RAM for it.
I tried Kingston 512 DDR ECC SDRAM (not registered) and it didn't work. Will Kingston 512 DDR ECC Registered RAM work? I'd like to know for sure since RAM is non-refundable.
and what should I do with the extra 512 ECC I just bought? Will iit work with normal Athlon XP boards?

thanks a lot.

Hello!

Dell servers usually take ECC Registered Ram. You probably want to check with them first though.

ECC Ram doesn't work with regular XP boards, but does work with most Dual processor boards.

I have found Dell uses odd numbered RAM like PC1600, check what kind they use

With the extra RAM that didn't work I would say sell it on EBAY

I am in trouble with those 2 sticks of 512mb ECC DDR here.. :(

By the way, anyone has any ideas on how much RAM is good enough (so that the server won't use swap space) for about 30 domains and 100Gb/month?

Thanks.

30 domains/100 gigs month

I'd say you can't go wrong with 512. You may be able to get by with 256 or 384. It really depends on the type of websites.

2 gigs is a ridiculous amount for his specs. I have a server with 600 domains and 1 terabyte of transfer/month that doesn't use 2 gigs.

Yeah, 2Gb is too much for me, this is the server for my personal sites, organization site and some of my clients. Not for hosting business though. That server has a P4 2.4Ghz chip so it will be fast I hope. :)

I think i will go with 512+128 (the server came with 128) first and then switch to 1gb if I could.

I am having a virtual host with ***.com and "top" on their server returned that they are using 256Mb of swap.. guess how much RAM they have .. 4Gb!! That must be a whole lot of domains..
moving out is definitely a good choice. *sigh*

Yeah, 512mb is more than enough for most sites (unless it's extremely popular).

Go to www.crucial.com and enter the server that you bought. They have a database that stores all of Dell's server numbers and will show you the correct ram to buy. Anyway, at least this way you will know what your server needs and you can buy the ram elsewhere (even though crucial ram is excellent, and I highly recommend it! :D)
