View Full Version : Which? Ded Now or The Planet?

I have been looking and trying to decide which dedicated provider to go with. I have narrowed down my choice to 2 providers, DedicatedNow and The Planet. I originally had decided on RackShack but after careful thought decided against them simply because they do not offer CPanel. The following are the plans I need to choose from:

The Planet:
Celeron 1.4ghz – 512mb RAM – 40gb – 300gb bandwidth – RedhatLinux 7.3 – Cpanel ($45/month) – 4 Ip’s - $144/month no setup

Dedicated Now:
Intel Pentium III 1.2 ghz – 512 mb RAM – 500gb bandwidth – 60gb space – 5 IP’s – Cpanel - $169.90/month no setup – RedhatLinux 7.3

The no set up with the planet is through the coupon WHT. I am able to pay setup up to $100, so that is why dedicated now's price is higher p/month than if I paid the $299 set up.

In reality, I only need the 40 gb currently, however the price with dednow is close to the planet while offering 20gb more disk space and 200gb more bandwidth, although a .2 difference in processor speed (which I am not concerned about). I would eventually upgrade the memory as well but that is a ways off.

What do you guys think of these plans, and which would you choose?

I think theplanet's customers are much happier, search around in these forums. I just got a server today (by the way, it's already up) now that's service :D

I have several friends love ThePlanet very very much, and it fulls of nice reviews on the board.

Will purchase my next server in a couple of weeks from them, hopefully.

When all you guys are talking about The Planet`s servers... are you talking about the cheaper "SuperMicro SuperServer" which can be found in the "current specials" section for around $150-200/month... or the other regular servers they have which is 3 times more expensive at $400+/month?

Are the SuperServer`s just as good quailty as the other regular servers though...what`s the main difference between them?

The server in my example above is the "Super Celeron Special". Here's the link to it's page:

I am curious as well to the quality. Born2drv, what server did you decide on?

I have the jr super server :) ($99/month one)

As for the quality of the hardware I'm not sure I can really comment yet, but I did just transfer over all my sites from Nocster using the transfer function in WHM --- very handy tool, and very quick :) You may have to delete some log files for your larger sites for it to copy over though.

My nocster server was a P4-1.7, this is P3-1.4. I doubt I will see any performance difference, the main reason I switched was for reliability and network reasons. If it is slower, I'll just buy another 512 ram for +$20/mo.

Never use ThePlanet before but our Client VERY happy with DN. Their support is super.

The Junior Server is a 1.4 Celeron, not a P3-1.4. The gap in speed and performance between a Celeron and a P3 is quite large.

Tandem, you brushed on one of my questions. How much of a difference is there in performance between the Celeron 1.4 and the Pentium III 1.2? Two of my computers are a P3 & P4 and I experience no discernable difference. I do not have a Celeron to compare with though.

Have two servers in both, theplanet due to the fact tickets are answered fast. We had a ticket go unanswered for 48+ hours at dedicatednow regarding our ip being given to another server.

theplanet rocks I have a 2.0 p4 with them for their $149 a month $0 setup they are top notch answer phones and I have not had a second of downtime in over a month and a half. They include on site monitoring with the servers and they actually really monitor them! Extremely professional did I mention they answer the phone?

I also have a box with Dedicatednow, and have been satisfied with them.

Just my personal view on it... but celeron is very bad. I am on a celeron machine right now and I am just itching to get my p4 notebook out of the bag ... but im too lazy to get up. lol.

I looked at both services and I am a bit new to this but ThePlanet looks like a good bet, 149.00 for the super server! Not much more then I am paying at Server Beach. But on the other hand, if you needed more IP addresses ... Dedicated Now seems to have a great price on a block of 10 ... 5.00!!!

A lot! My reference was to a Celeron and a P3 at the same clock speed. I'd easily predict that a P3-1.2 would outperform the Celeron 1.4. I wouldn't deal with or touch the Celerons for database apps or shared hosting. It's the cheapest CPU money can buy. An AMD Duron (at the same price level) will run rings around a Celeron.

Theplanet.com itself until a month ago had been criticising other ISPs for offering cheap and inferior Celerons (these are the exact words that were used on their website). They seem to've changed their tune now and are offering them as a so-called junior-level server. What next? A PII special at 400 Mhz for $59? :D

Where on the site?

Celerons are pretty crappy. Small caches, and clock speed also isn't anything to go by at all.

I've never used either. I almost went with The Planet. I received A++++++ pre-sales support from Jeff via email, AIM, and the phone. From what I've dealt with from Jeff The Planet seems like a very solid foundation.

For DedNOW, I emailed the CEO of that/pweb about moving there before. It was around 4 - 5 days ago and I've still never recieved a reply back.... but Jeff replied to me within 10 minutes and we talked then he told me to call to discuss further and they anwsered before it rang.

I'm going to be getting a machine with The Planet pretty soon. I don't think I'd look twice into DedNOW just because I've yet to recieve a reply to my email... pre-sales is a big factor to me, and The Planet did all I wanted and more to make me feel good about picking them as a future provider.

As for a Celeron again, stay away if you do heavy hosting ... I used to use one, eek!

BTW, here's some interesting pricing from the past at theplanet: :D

Thanks guys....I think at this point I am leaning toward the planet for several reasons. 1(and not knocking dednow) I want to get one by Mon-Tue, 2) I sent the planet an email with some questions and received a reply in just over two hours from Jeff(and this was late last night) 3) Pentium. I will admit my vain side in wanting to have something because of the brand. When I bought my last 2 computers, I had to have pentium's in them. Like I said, I haven't used a Celeron and your comments help support my reluctance to do so.

Now I have to evaluate the price issue. The price for the SuperServer w/cpanel, pentium 4 2.0ghz, 40gb, 500gb band, 512 ram, 8 ip's, and Redhat 7.3 is $194/month. More than I had planned, but as they say, you get what you pay for. I am willing to pay more if it equals better service & support. So far, The Planet has demonstrated through others it is worth it.

So what's the point?

Just to let you know the reason we started offering the Celeron is because people kept asking for a very entry level server with the Celeron processor.

DedNow definitely should have replied to you, but in another thread it was mentioned that DedNow has stopped taking orders for a few weeks while it shores up its resources after sustaining massive growth in the last month. Definitely admirable, of course ignoring email is not...

Have people spefically asked for a server with Celeron or have they just asked for a $99 server? I doubt if people would be asking for a Celeron IMHO.

You also have @ IP at $2/mo and you're giving 60% of the bandwidth of your super server. I don't think it's a coincidence that you've sold just 1 to date.

You should have emailed sales or matt. I get more email in my inbox than you can possibly imagine, not to mention we are working on alot of things here that require my attention. Please send of an email to matt or sales@dedicatednow.com and we will see what we can do.

That's a poor excuse. We all receive mountains of emails. Can't answer them? Delegate! Forward them to Matt! Or whatever! :)

Hey, no worries I found a provider. I was surfing the DedNOW forums at the time and read someone wanted a better machine then you offer (as did I, I was looking for P4 2.x + scsi + 1 + gig ddram ..) and you said to email you (in that thread) so I just followed the advice you gave someone else.

No worries. I figured emailing you might of been laggy but I thought I would of recieved a reply.

No problems here. Looks like you'll be getting enough orders soon anyways from a lot of ex-nocster clients...
