Sun Microsystems Delivers The First Java™ Server Appliance Platform
Sun Cobalt™ Developer Kit for Drop and Go Delivery of Java Solutions on Sun Cobalt Server Appliances
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - JavaOne Developer Conference - June 4, 2001 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced Java™ technology for Sun Cobalt™: server appliances. Sun Cobalt server appliances are pre-configured with a full suite of Web application tools that make the development and deployment of applications and Web services quick, easy and affordable. With Java technology on the Sun Cobalt server-appliance platform, developers are able to minimize their development efforts, increase their return on investment and quickly take to market affordable, turnkey solutions.
The Sun Cobalt Developer Kit for Java is available free to developers who want to quickly and easily create and deploy server-side Java-based Web applications with the ease of use and reliability for which Sun Cobalt server appliances are known. Java technology is drop-and-go: simply download the Sun Cobalt Developer Kit for Java to any Sun Cobalt Qube 3 or Sun Cobalt RaQ™ server appliance.
"Sun Cobalt server appliances are becoming the application delivery platform of choice for many developers," said Richard Finlayson, Group Marketing Manager, Developer Relations, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "With Java technology on our server appliances, we eliminated configuration requirements so that publishing Web applications based on Java, JavaServer Pages™ and Java Servlet technologies is now as simple as dropping files on the server."
The Sun Cobalt Developer Kit for Java includes Apache Tomcat 3.2, a popular open-source JSP and Java Servlet technology-based implementation that Sun Microsystems, Inc. and other leading vendors have helped develop through the Apache Software Foundation. JSP and Java Servlet technology-based Web applications are used as a plug-in module to the Apache Web server that ships with every Sun Cobalt server appliance. Also included in the kit is Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition™ (JS2E™) version 1.3.1, the latest Java technology from Sun Microsystems, Inc
