View Full Version : Reseller account question
drhonk 06-11-2001, 03:22 AM Hi guys,
I know a lot of you are using cpanel with WHM. If I'm not mistaken, WHM let your reseller to add their own account through their control panel right ?
Is it wise to give them control to add their own user ? I'm asking this question because I'm not using cpanel since my servers are FreeBSD based and I'm thinking about adding reselling capability.
What other command are they allow to do other than adding their client account themselves ?
Wazeh 06-11-2001, 07:53 AM You don't have to let them be able to create new
accounts. You can modify individual reseller permissions
and allow/disallw many features.
But why would you want to disallow it? I personally would rather treat resellers more like partners than restrict them.
koolguru 06-11-2001, 09:13 AM Through Your WHM you can add/remove the following reseller privileges :-
- Account Creation
- Add Domains
- Turn an account into a demo account
- Account Modification
- Edit DNS Entries
- Enabling/Disabling FrontPage Extensions
- Account Termination
- Delete Domains
- Bandwidth Limiting
- List Accounts
- Mail Trouble Shooter
- Enabling/Disabling SubDomains
- Password Modification
- Quota Modification
- Rearrange Accounts (used to free up disk space)
- Reset Shopping Cart
- Resync Ftp Passwords
- Restart Services
- View Account Bandwidth Usage
- Enabling/Disabling SSL Support

Billy 06-11-2001, 10:33 AM Okay, this probably sounds a bit stupid, but what exactly is WHM?
Ericd 06-11-2001, 10:36 AM WHM = WebHostManager (the tool that comes with CPanel, but for the host, where you can create an account, suspend it, kill it, etc)
Dogma 06-11-2001, 10:48 AM /me wants WHM!!:D /me wants WHM!!:D
Wazeh 06-11-2001, 11:40 AM Dogma, you get WHM along with Cpanel3. It's a companion program if you want to call it that...
Dogma 06-11-2001, 12:59 PM How do i access it? www.domain.com/whm?
Ericd 06-11-2001, 01:29 PM http://www.yourdomain.com:2086/
or
http://Your.IP.address:2086/
Timothy 06-11-2001, 01:31 PM http://domain.com:2086/
Wazeh 06-11-2001, 01:38 PM dogma, the methods described by HostAB should work.
Note however that access to Cpanel doesn't necessarily mean you have access to WHM. WHM is intended for hosts and their resellers. Although it is possible to set it up so that regular customers can have some access. For example if one needs full control over their DNS.

Get-Hosted.com 06-11-2001, 01:50 PM What do most hosts here do with their resellers?
Let them create accounts by themselves... and delete them? Or restrict them in some way?
Jedito 06-11-2001, 03:25 PM We let the resellers create the accounts'and gives them 24 hours to pay..
we have:
(2) account creation
(7)Enabling/Disablin Frontpage extensions.
(8) Account termination.
(11) List Accounts.
(13) Enabling/Disabling Subdomains
(14) Password modifications.
(17) Reset Shopping cart.
(20) View Bandwidth usage
(22) View account stadistics
(23) Accounts Suspension
(24) Accounts upgrade.
And that's all :)
Wazeh 06-11-2001, 03:28 PM There are a few things which I don't like about WHM (from a host's prespective). One of them is that you cann't restrict a reseller from modifying the package specs if you allow him to create accounts. So if a reseller picks plan A but adds 3 or 4 more Gigs to the bandwidth, it goes through...
I saw it once with one of our resellers. It took a note to the offending reseller and everything is ok since, but this is one thing you have to keep your eyes on if you allow resellers to create accounts.

You can prevent this by simply disabling the "Account Modification" option for that reseller, while leaving "Account Creation" and "Account Termination" enabled.
This would allow the reseller to create and remove accounts, but they would need to go through you in order to add things like bandwidth or disk space.
