View Full Version : redundancy with 1 server?

Hi everyone; I'm hosting about 50 band sites for a record label here in Canada. I just moved the sites to Servepath.com, because we were eating up a lot of space.

I am handling DNS, but right now I only have a primary nameserver for each domain. Obviously, this is not good. What is the best way to handle DNS and email redundancy if you only have 1 server? I was thinking of a few options:

1) setup a second server at home (I have 3meg/sec cable, but no static IP; can I use a dynip type service?)

2) hire an outside secondary DNS service... but do I have to update them each time I add a domain?

This would only be for the 10 mins/month or so the server is down. Would the secondary DNS "hold" the mail so it won't bounce? (BTW: the http service is not "mission critical")

thanks for your advice!!!

rubberman,

email will be queued and delivery will be retried if the mail server is down. dns wont help you 'hold' mail.

For the mail issue setup a second mail server that will recieve the mail if thew primary is done and then when the first server comes back the second will send any mail it is holding to it.

what is the least expensive way to do the above... I don't want to purchase another dedicated server @ servepath for this purpose right now.

is there outsourced mail server services?
