View Full Version : RAQ 4 memory advice
Matthew.A 03-26-2003, 05:11 AM Hi
Just after some advice :)
My old RAQ4 has a measily 128mb ram and recently I've noted that free memory is VERY low (AND had a couple of warning e-mails/crashes). Would increasing the memory to 512mb sort my issues or should I now think about a more powerful box? The RAQ has servered me well and I don't want the hassle of change twice (Will need to change box as host will not increase memory without silly prices!) if I can get away with just more memory. Thoughts?
TIA
-Edward- 03-26-2003, 05:14 AM I have an RAQ4 with 60 or 70 active busy sites a lot of them have major MySQL and PHP intergration and we run it with 512mb and have rarely come close to using all the ram. Think the closest we've come is around 80% of the ram being used and that was when we had a few problems with php.
microsol 03-26-2003, 07:03 AM Memory is so cheap right now. Why not getting two 256MB sticks and see how it goes?
Make shure to get registered RAM.
Matthew.A 03-26-2003, 07:20 AM Becasue I rent it and they won't do that, I have to change planes which will double my monthly costs (read rip-off!)
microsol 03-26-2003, 07:36 AM Then blow it and get a better machine with another provider shurely for the same price if not cheaper. Make shure it comes with a CP.
Matthew.A 03-27-2003, 05:50 AM Biggest problem is I'm running ASP and PHP sites at the moment, and not being a real tech expert on the server side of things, I find the Raq quite easy to work on.
-Edward- 03-27-2003, 11:14 AM Then get a RAQ550 with a 1ghz and 1gb ram from http://www.raq4less.com same kinda system and very easy to manage.
Matthew.A 03-27-2003, 03:05 PM That will double my costs, bit more than I really wanted to spend :(
-Edward- 03-28-2003, 05:24 AM How much are you willing to spend? ill try find a solution for you.
Matthew.A 03-28-2003, 06:13 AM I didn't really want to go over £100 a month, and am currently spending £75 a month (UK based). I've seen some good deals on raq4r's but I'd rather have more power as well :)
-Edward- 03-28-2003, 06:25 AM Give us a day or so and ill compile a list ... i was going to suggest dedicated-servers but your already with them ...
Although if you wanted to goto America for your hosting you could get a RAQ4i for $99 which is £63.37 from http://www.rackshack.net/english/bargain.asp
Matthew.A 03-28-2003, 06:32 AM Yes, I saw them but I've also seen a deal on a raq4r which is about the same, however I do feel that more CPU power would be of benefit. I also think that the current pricing for RAQ550 is a bit high, considering that the hosting costs are the same in reality :) That's for any input (my biggest problem with ded-cated-servers is there bandwith of 5gb/m!)
-Edward- 03-28-2003, 06:37 AM Why not get an ensim server? just as easy as a RAQ to too maintain..
Matthew.A 03-28-2003, 06:51 AM Hmm - didn't realise those had ASP on them as well... maybe a possibility
-Edward- 03-28-2003, 07:04 AM I believe you can get a version of Chili!Soft ASP and the spice pack at a much cheaper price than the license for an RAQ .... i saw it on a website the other day just can't remember the URL sorry .....
Matthew.A 03-28-2003, 07:11 AM That's my biggest problem, one site on ASP, I'd like to change it to PHP but it's all a mater of time and $ and I'm only one man!
Matthew.A 03-28-2003, 07:21 AM Could you possible ICQ or MSN me? 108366675 (need's authorisation, so quote server or something) Matthew@DPS.uk.com rather than chat on here?
-Edward- 03-28-2003, 09:29 AM I'm at work right now so don't have access to them on my machine yet ... i can add you from home if and when i go online at home ....
Matthew.A 03-28-2003, 09:39 AM Well any advice is welcome :) I have to admit some confusion, Ensim is just like PlesK? An interfact to control the device, so I'd still need a server that had ASP on it in some form. Or is there also a Ensim server that pretty much does everything a RAQ does?
-Edward- 03-28-2003, 09:42 AM if you want to chat via email my work addie is ed@legend.co.uk
Ensim, Plesk, RAQs are all the same .... so much can be done from the control panel the rest via the command line. Cept with Ensim everything is explained easily and you dont have to wait weeks for security updates like on RAQs...
Do you like RAQ's because it's all pkg's mainly too update?
