Hiya

Can anyone suggest a good Shell host? I've been looking around for some time, but all I found so far is shellz on adsl or home cable connections!

Thnks

Though a bit slow at times, Nether (http://www.nether.net/) is a pretty good service. They have all sorts of apps preinstalled and you don't need to mail them to get an account or anything.

never had personal experience with them, but i know of people who use them to run bots on couple channels that i help operate. they seem reliable enough :)

They're a full ISP, but do offer shell-only accounts. Full shell with remote login is $10 monthly or $100/year; dialup access is also available. I've had an account there for over than ten years and can't say enough good things.

www.ghostweb.net (FreeBSD 4.3 I believe)
www.lomag.net (Slack 7.0 I think)

Very good and very fast shell providers. Ghostweb is on very large OC connections.

The last time I checked, jtan.com provided shell access for cheap... they have a representative who is the member of this board, Vince Paglione. Give them a look...

This is one of the unixrules.net shell account features:

Access to hundreds of VHOSTS

What's a vhost and what is it good for to get access to hundreds of them? Can anyone explain?

Vhosts are used for IRC (either for bouncers or bots). It lets you use hosts like joe@lives.at.the.wh1tehouse.com instead of just joe@shellprovider.com on IRC. If you're not going to be using your shell for IRC, they're pointless (and even if you will be, they're still relatively pointless).

Don't forget shell hosts get DoS'ed every so often...

Is that to hide my real host, in order to avoid attacks against it? If so I don't see why those hundreds of other domain owners allow other peoples to use their servers, so they will receive the attack which was actually thought to hit another one...? Or do I still miss what's the idea of using vhosts?

All the hosts point to the shell provider. The only person who avoids attacks is you personally (ie. your home/work connection). Usually, the shell provider owns all the domains. So no one else is really affected by any attacks.

The main reason people use them? It's considered an elitest/hacker/leet thing mainly. Vanity rules!
