This may be off topic , please move if you feel it is , Chicken . I am interested in leasing a server that has webhost manager on it . I am assuming installing mod_throttle won't be an issue but would like to hear from anybody that has done this and what thier issues may or may not have been .

LOL , I meant should it be in tech issues ? I thought I might find more ventureonline users here than in tech issues .

I'm pretty sure all cpanel based servers have mod_throttle installed on them now. There is a feature in WHM that allows you to restrict the amount of bandwidth for a specific user, and I'm pretty sure it is based on mod_throttle.

You can always send an email to sales@venturesonline.com and ask the same question.

I did email Pat and asked some questions on the bandwidth link in webhost and here is an excerpt of his reply :

"You can put a limit in your packages and per domain for bandwidth. If there is a limit set, then the account will actually not work for the rest of that month until the limit is raised or we roll into a new month (There would be an HTML page displayed saying the site exceeds bandwidth usage). We set our virtual accounts up as unlimited and charge for the additional bandwidth. We do monitor our systems, however, because high bandwidth use can (but not always) also mean high cpu usage and can also indicate abuse (e.g. porno, hacker, etc). "

Based on that , it is only tracking movement across the month . I have mod_throttle installed on my current server and it allows you to cause delays , put a ceiling on transfer , refuse connections over a certain level etc. In other words if you have a customer that suddenly is drafting 800k constant , you can slow him down , without actually shutting him down and still preserve a both a customer and your sanity . I normally run it wide open server wide , but more than once I had to grab a customer and drop him down a few notches until I could contact him and explain that there would be some bandwidth charges coming if he didn't get a handle on it .
We don't believe in just letting a customer run wild and then nail him with a fat bill , we try to be as up front as possible and never charge a credit card without prior consent . That said , mod_throttle is a great tool that allows us to contact a customer before charging him , seems to go a long way with the customers too .

I am going to email Pat again and ask if webhost is just using a portion of mod_throttle for the monthly transfer limits , if so then I can just modify the config to do whatever I want with it .

Mrgood could you post an exaple of your setup for a domain? I have tried using this mod to slow down a site and the outcome what broken images etc. I want to simply do like you said, slow them down but not hamper the site.

Thanks in advance.

For Dilhole , its kinda hard to show it at work without a site being up on bandwidth , I just checked my server mrtg and its at 23k for the whole server , I could put the skids on a site but you wouldn't be able to tell because there is no traffic except on couple of my clients sites but even then the traffic is so low right now ......

I did email Pat :
ME : Your bandwidth limit in WHM , is that just using a portion of mod_throttle ? I mean is mod_throttle installed and WHM is just using the monthly transfer portion of it ?
Pat : No, WHM and CPanel has it's own custom Apache Module to monitor httpd bandwidth.

Mrgoodhost....could you post how you have your thottle mod setup in apache? Like what lines of code you use etc. When I set it up(im doing it wrong) I cant slow down a site, i seem to stop it and 1/2 the stuff doesnt get thru. I dont need to see mrtg graphs :) Maybe I am confused....this is very possible hehe

Thanks

Can you share us your experience?
I would like to know is it OK to install mod_throttle on a server with Cpanel and WHM.

Thanks in advance.
