View Full Version : independent, honest, unbiased ?
billclinton 08-03-2000, 10:41 PM What is this "Independent, Honest, Unbiased".
People have openly admitted here they are Biased..
I don't think the Unbiased part is near as accurate as you would like it to be Matt.
Biased towards what? Certain hosts? Yes, because we've been with some for a long time, and love their tech support. Others, we deride because we've also been with them and got crap service, uptime, speed and plain rudeness.
I will say this much : you will always get an amount of bias in any board or web host review site - it's just a matter how much there is (particularly in view of those host review sites supported by ads and posting numerous favourable reviews of those hosts whose service has been derided time and time again). For this, it's reliant on the ppl who frequent these boards and sites.
Oh yeah, and if you want to be taken legitimately, register your name instead of posting behind an alias.

Annette 08-03-2000, 11:14 PM Hey, Matt, no fair. We should all get our own troll. :)

Duster 08-03-2000, 11:23 PM I thought about the three words when I saw them earlier, along with the graphic. They are not inaccurate, especially as compared to many other host discussion and rating sites.
I take it to mean that advertising dollars do not bias any ratings by the site itself. In that contect, webhostingtalk is independent of affiliation of any hosting company, not biased in its reviews (even if individual reviewers might be), and honest in that it lacks that bias and allows civil discussion of any host.
Even so, to a degree, one's own perceptions frequently come into play. For instance, Bill Clinton would have us believe that oral sex is not sex. Obviously, he does not suffer from a bias towards the truth (or reality as the rest of us see it).
I like the graphic. I think of the guy as laughing and saying "Unlimited WHAT?"

Duster 08-03-2000, 11:27 PM Besides, we have several people here, including some that represent hosting companies, who are unbiased (except towards proper service) and often make recoomendations of several companies, and not always their own included.
LOL!
Meanwhile, while you're still around Annette, I found this interesting link which I thought you'd like for your 'outside link' in the next update. (and others might like to have a good look at it too :))

Quite appropriate especially considering some of the flame wars in Sitepoint and Scriptkeeper :D

Annette 08-03-2000, 11:59 PM I've seen that page before. Since I'm a week behind in updates, I was planning one for this weekend, and I'll go ahead and use that one. :)

Annette 08-04-2000, 09:22 AM Long ago when I toiled away as a slave^H^H^H phone droid (and then email droid) at AOHell, I started a page detailing some of the nightmares that tech support people face. I have since moved on to the more glamourous work of network/system admins, but the page has been pretty much continuously updated since 1997 with tech support tales - recently, of course, it had the True Hosting Follies added, which added immeasurably to the amusement factor, according to the volume of email that I receive. You can see it at http://www.technogirl.net if you like. Unfortunately, it's been three weeks since the last update, since I've been so busy with the crush of businesss, but I'm planning an update for this weekend, which should help keep down those "Where's the update?" mails that I keep getting.

Okay, I will remove that bit before tonight. Thanks.

I was originally going to say 'No, don't remove it', but as I think about it, maybe you could move it to a sub-tagline that says something like, "This Forum isn't biased, only our members are!" :) I think that might clarify what you are trying to say.
I think it is important to somehow promote the fact you don't censor posts because a company is paying you some money. In fact, the only messages that are removed are the ones that don't follow the Terms, and rightfully so.
Yes, everyone in this forum has an opinion. If they didn't, this forum and others like it wouldn't exist. Right? It's everyone's opinion and information that makes this interesting and why so many folks keep coming back.
Contrast this FORUM to the REVIEW sites, most of which seem to be strongly influenced by Hosting companies' payments. Thanks largely to this and a couple other forums, I've dismissed the review sites (except for one who's name escapes me at the moment) because I don't trust them.
I say, in some way, keep the bit about unbiased. Maybe just be more specific about who it applies to (the forum and it's admins). Don't let a SlickWilly Wannabe cloud your mind. (now THAT should get some responses! :) )

I don't think we are biased...we are INFORMED!!! I for one, have been on quite a few hosting services since 1997, and i have left some that treated me poor, and stayed on the ones that treated me well.
I currently am on 3 different hosting companies, and i do not get paid when people i refer actually sign up with them, and i don't ever know if any of these people ever do sign up with any of them, I do it to try to help them out.
