View Full Version : higher bandwith needed
purity 06-10-2001, 01:42 AM OK... I'm getting hit with a lot of bandwith overages with my current provider. I've got no real beef with them, I guess my site's popularity just grew more than I expected.
My site's currently sized at 800MB, but will grow to 1 gig.
Bandwith currently using somewhere between 20 and 30gig/month - think I need around 40 to play it safe (?). (my current plan maxes at 20.... then it gets expensive real quick!
Looking for shared Unix hosting with PHP4, MySQL, Apache with full CGI access. At least 50 email account, telnet, and crontab access.... and a static IP. Don't care about anon FTP... but I like being able to set up more than 1 FTP account so that people uploading to my site can do so to their own folder.
I'd like relatively good tech support, although I often don't need it - just when things go wrong ;)
(that struck me as funny..... must be late)
Thanks in advance.

Oh, fair question, forgot about that....
I'm currently paying $30/month before the bandwith overages hit. That gives me 3gigs of space and 20gig transfer. However when the overbandwith charge hits it's $10/gig prepay $20/gig - oops I had no idea we were so popular this month!
So I think our realistic budget would be somwhere between the $30 and the $130 we're paying now.
What I don't understand is why my current provider wouldn't let me just pay $60/month and give me 40 gigs of transfer.... I don't even need more hard drive space.
Maybe I'll just host a second domain name there and weave my site across the 2 domains.
I don't think that I really want my own dedicated server, because I have _NO_ experience in successfully installing things like apache, php, mysql, and cgi-bin. (I've spent some time _very_ unsuccessfully installing those on my linux box at home! - just enough time to know I'm more of a web designer than a good server administrator)
However having said that, I'll fire off some emails to rackshack and 4webspace and see if they can't help me out somehow.
It's just interesting how there doesn't really seem to be much middle ground between the $20/30 per month and suddenly $100+
Thanks for any suggestions.

That is because they will lose money on you. 40GB x $2 = $80 and you want to pay them $60. There are some hosts that get bandwidth for cheaper and some that get it for a higher price.
Jedito 06-10-2001, 06:53 PM Purity.. maybe you can change the size of the front Image.. it have 210 KB.
if you have 10.000 visitis monthly, only with that image you use 2.100.000 KB (2GB) only in 1 jpg.
Purity,
May i know what host you are on currently? How's their tech support & uptimes?
Thanks

Sure - it's *****
Tech support hold times can be extensive at times. However, in the past 4 months I've been there I really haven't had to call very often. To get options installed is a CGI script that works pretty well. And if I put in a "trouble ticket" that seems to get sorted out in about 24 hrs. I've never had to deal with things that needed immediate attention with them (ie my site went down.... WHAT THE *&%S GOING ON!)
Uptime hasn't been a problem at all.
We've been up ever since I started there.... which is more than I can say for the place I was at before..
I've seen a lot of negative things about CI on this board here the past 3 days that I've been looking, but to be honest I really haven't had any of the problems that others have had. Like I said, the bandwith prices seem to be excessive... that's my only gripe.
They also have a really great and friendly abuse team.
When some kid was trying to get us shut down by uploading .mp3 files to our anon FTP server they helped us get it sorted out quickly, even moving us to a new server..... that didn't take too long.
Unfortunately I kind of think that these same kids are trying to use up my bandwith just so I have to pay more! There's some stupid site rivalry going on... and if it isn't stealing passwords and repointing nameserver addresses.... it's something else. <sigh>
I'd really appreciate if someone would point me in a direction of somewhere around 40gigs of transfer a month.
Regards,
Purity

illogix 06-13-2001, 04:11 AM Maybe you should sign up for a reseller account at Donhost (www.donhost.com). For under 60$ us (I think), you would get unlimitted webspace and 40gig of transfer.
I know that unlimitted webspace isn't possible but I think that for 1 gig you would be ok.
Atlantis 06-13-2001, 04:09 PM If you can wait until the 25th June, then I recommend you go for Worldzone Pro's Titanium Plan. That gives 1.5 GB space and 52 GB monthly bandwidth for $64 monthly. However the plan isn't available until the 25th.
Oh, you also get Toll Free Phone Support :)
