Just decided to make new system by buying couple imporant components and using some parts of existing computer.

this will be office stuff (word processing), graphics user (photoshop and soon 3D Studio Max r4), and games ;)

First, anyone know cheapest place to buy 1.2 AMD Thunderbird 266FSB processor? The cheapest one i found was $168 (retail box). If anyone knows anywhere cheaper then that, let me know :)

Also, video card... I want a GeForce2 GTS or Pro... I've had a chance to look into the pricing for MSI, LeadTek, and Creative. Anyone have any experience with MSI or LeadTek? I know Creative is pretty good, but I've never heard of MSI or LeadTek making vid cards (only msi making mobos).

I'm definately getting Abit KT7A mobo for my 1.2ghz TB ;)

also any place to get some good looking 300watt cases? :)

Thanks!

For your CPU, T-Bird 1.33 GHZ 266 for $164.95. Sounds good? It's OEM though.

I think I've heard that Leadtek video cards are pretty decent.

For cases, I like Antec the best. You can usually find good deals on their cases at Egghead, Computers4sure.com, and others. Their new SX830 Workstation Mid-tower is quite nice. If you want something cheaper, their KS282 comes in a configuration with a 300 watt PS.

Here are some good links if you are purchasing computer parts.
http://www.directron.com -Based in Texas cheap prices, quick shipping, GREAT case selection.
http://www.accessmicro.com -Based in CA I think, cheap prices, they stick you with high shipping costs.
http://www.cyberpowerinc.com -Based in CA, I got a AMD T-Bird 900/ASUS A7V for 145.00 two weeks ago. They are cheap but customer support sucks. I never got a shipping email, there phone support sucks, and don't even try the web based chat they have. But I did get working/new/correct parts.

hehe, i got 256 PC100 PNY RAM on this computer im using right now...

running smooth, especially on Win2k cause it has great memory management!

runs like crap on WinMe tho... but memory is cheap now anyways... i bought the first stick of 128mb memory $99 when memory price was going up like hellfire 3 years ago... and i bought second stick of 128 early this year :) for $14 total! (just got my $40 refund back) hehe

now, ill be getting PC133... anyone know if i can mix PC100 and PC133 memory on mobo? it'll be an Abit KT7A :)

thanks

ps. if you are using WinMe and you have 128mb of ram, you'll see alot of system processing improvement if you switch to Win2k :)

I'd have to advise you on getting an OEM processor and get a good HSF. Retails only keep them cool enough to run, no OCing whatsoever. http://www.pricewatch.com is a good place to get the best prices on computer parts, but be sure to check the rating before you buy from them at http://resellerratings.com

newegg.com has great deals on Leadtek video cards and they are great.

BTW: If your looking to OC, get a T-Bird 1ghz AXIA version, and a good HSF and it will easily hit 1.3-1.4 GHZ with that KT7A and some good ram.
