SolidJoe 03-23-2003, 04:21 PM Go look it up yourself? PS JonS 03-23-2003, 04:48 PM PSI = Cogent now, isn't it? -- Jonathan Websinlimite 03-24-2003, 08:56 AM Yes It is the same ReliableServers 03-24-2003, 02:49 PM Cogent owns PSI. Dragoon 03-24-2003, 04:25 PM Originally posted by Dilhole Cogent owns PSI. Not exactly. PSInet went bankrupt. This was no great surprise considering their service sucked and they were incredibly expensive. Cogent bought *some* of PSInet's US assets out of bankruptcy. The rest of the company/network was sold off to other parties. Joshua 03-24-2003, 05:12 PM Is PSInet just plain old Cogent now, or does it have better peering agreements, and will not take mainly cogent routes to reach the destination? Dragoon 03-24-2003, 06:39 PM Originally posted by MainAreaJosh Is PSInet just plain old Cogent now, or does it have better peering agreements, and will not take mainly cogent routes to reach the destination? Cogent bought PSInet's US IP network for the purpose of exploiting its peering. There is no such thing as PSInet anymore. Anything that was is now Cogent. Cogent has already started losing some of the peering that they picked up. Most peering agreements have performance or traffic ratio clauses that Cogent cannot live up to. Same reason AOL (atdn.net) dropped Cogent as a peer. Joshua 03-26-2003, 04:38 PM Actually, PSINet is Cogent's T1 and T3 product line. If you look closely at PSINet's site, it states that the colo bandwidth is Cogent. On their site, they also try to make it seem like Cogent has a better network than most ISPs... Yeah right. alapo 03-26-2003, 04:50 PM Originally posted by MainAreaJosh Actually, PSINet is Cogent's T1 and T3 product line. Yeah right. $3000 for 100mbit and a full rack + power and such is still a great deal IMHO. ServeTech 03-26-2003, 06:27 PM Cogent's network IS better than most other ISP's in terms of performance (80Gbps, IIRC)... it is the lack of peering that causes Cogent to be a poor choice. Joshua 03-26-2003, 09:21 PM For me, some sites hosted on Cogent badwidth have high pings (Cogentco.com has 157ms for me), but I've seen some as low as 40ms. PSI has improved the cogent network somewhat, as there is now a NY PSI peering point that makes many cogent routes shorter for me. -Josh |
