I am starting up as a reseller. And I was wondering, if I have my own private name server from my host, what would happen if I change to another host?

How do I migrate my clients to a new host. Do I have to send them a email asking them to change the IP from their registrator?

Thanks,

Peter

Since the nameservers are created under your domain, you should be able to change the IPs of the nameservers by yourself (with most registrars). If not, a simple e-mail to the registrar should get things changed over.

Basically first thing first. Make sure your Nameserver entries are correct with your Registrar, then setup zones for the desired domains to resolve to it. Test them from an nslookup session, if they work then have the domains updated their NIC records to your Nameserver. Voila! That should be it, providing everything runs smooth.

Thank you all for your reply, but I am still a bit uncertain(excuse the newbie)

Assuming I have ns.xxx.com as my name server. If I want to change to another host, all I have to do is switch to the new host on a low traffic Sunday, setup another name server name exactly ns.xxx.com, and add all my clients to the new name server.

Am I right about the process? Will there be any down time?

Thanks,

Peter

Just make sure that your server configurations such as e-mail, DNS and web settings are duplicated on the new server. Is this is the case you can have the NIC information of your nameserver updated to the new IP address and it may not have downtime. But that is the key.
