I am new to this and I want to host my own web sites, preveously my school hosted them for me so I did not have to. But now I want to do it myself. What do I need and how can I do it? I have a PII 500 with 512mb running W2k and a cable modem so I don't think hardware is a problem or bandwidth. So what do i need to set this up?

You can use Internet Information Services which comes with Win2k, its on the cd, just insert it and the autorun should popup allowing you to install addons. It will guide you though that process, but if these sites have heavy traffic your cable modem prolly won't due, because most are capped upload. And also you'll want to check your ISP's Terms Of Service to make sure you'll be alllowed to run a server...

:( You will need a much fsater connection if your goning to host more then one site. At the least you will need a T1 or E1, what ever you call it, or some OC-12's + a lot of fiber lines. You will also not be able to us your computer because it would take up ram. Some of the best servers have about 60gigs ram. then again, thoes cost about $10,000. i saw one at my mothers job 2 days ago. Anyway, i think your computer could handle maybe one site that doesn't get that many hits. But your power can never go out nor you can us it for things like gaming, typing, email, etc... :D

make life easy, find a web host, it will cost you much less and you will have a better environment to run your website. Also, when you host at home, you run the risk of having your personal machine attacked. You may want to let others worry about things like security/connection speeds/hardware failure/etc..etc...

I have a T1 for only $49.95 CDN a month with unlimited usage. It really is unlimited too, the entire city has them in house.

Entire city has their Own T1?

Actually so far, the telephone company, NBtel has expanded it's T1 (called VIBE) to include Saint John, Quispamsis, Moncton, & Fredericton. 3 major cities. And yes, the T1's can be installed in any home that has above ground power lines and is in the 4 locations. Originally, we were only allowed 1 GB / month, then it went to 5 GB / month and now it's fully unlimited. :D

I would say go with a web host... hosting it on your own home server would require 24/7 power and good connection, and when you pull a lot of bandwidth through your cable connection, they will only cut you off.

T3 connection over $5,000 a month, T1 for only $49.95 CDN? Hmmm... I'd think that T3 would be more around $30K and I can't imagine they are giving you a full dedicated T1 for $50/mo (yeah, I know, CDN, doesn't matter). Anywhoooo that's a tangent, and Orpheus1539 said it best...
