View Full Version : Anyone know Java??
TheComputerGuy 07-26-2000, 09:42 PM ok, this does not go here, but i need some help. I have never been a fan of complicated java. but i want to make drop down boxes like www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com) or http://www.angelfire.com/scifi/sys00Q/menu.html has at the top of the page. I want to make a killer site. Any help would be nice and i would thank you for it. email chris@chrisdildy.com or post it here !!!!
You can find the 'cut&paste' code here - http://www.dynamicdrive.com/
or to zoom straight to menus section - http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex1/index.html
There are several different types of menus you can get, so take a look around there and you'll find some neat stuff. :D
I forgot to include this in my other post, if you want help with building your site try visiting - http://www.sitepoint.com
they have forums too.. http://www.sitepoint.com/cgi-bin/forums/Ultimate.cgi
MikeA 07-27-2000, 08:40 AM Check out this site. Totally free java. I use this on my site http://www.webauthorities.com, if you would like to see it in action:

Chicken 07-27-2000, 09:24 AM He could tell 'ya- but, then he'd hafta kill ya'.
Just kidding! It happens automatically once you reach a certain amount of posts. In due time, you'll become one... :)
(this post relates to Mike's posting of the Hiermenus @ Webreference.)
This little tidbit is completely off-topic, so ignore it if you like, but I find it really funny and stupid at the same time (being a DHTML developer myself) that the menus at Webreference still haven't gone on to version 4..... After nearly 2 years!!
Grrrrrrrrr..... I think I'll just avoid them all instead and stick with plain old decent navigation :D

MikeA 07-27-2000, 09:56 AM What is the version 4 supposed to do differently?

There is a beta version of version 4 available, and it's supposed to have support for all v.4 browsers and should be far quicker, but it's taken them *this* long to even get close to releasing v.4. Grrrrr.... As far as I can tell, there isn't *that" much noticeable improvement (from my testing)
I know enough about Java and DHTML to be dangerous (to myself)...
The last time I looked at the menus on the MS web site, they were DHTML --not Java.
BC eluded to this in his(her?) post.
Hope this helps somehow.

Unfortunately the number of webmasters far outnumber the number of eligible webmistresses we have around here ;)
ComputerGuy,
I would like to but I really don't know enough about it yet. A good resource for you for DHTML might be http://www.webreference.com/dhtml/ . They have some really cool stuff there. For Java, you might be better off getting a book or taking a class. It's much more like coding in C from what I understand.
Sorry if this sounds like I'm putting you off, that's not what I'm trying to do. With my limited knowledge on them, I struggle enough with the things I'm trying to do. :(
Anyway, try the link above for more info on DHTML.
