Not at all. As with any Asian host, bandwidth connectivity to overseas is not one of the best, especially to US given the high cost of the ocean cabling.

Secondly, most Japanese can't speak English. (And this board is in English)

Thirdly, most Japanese tend to be rather focused on serving their local market or overseas Japanese companies

In the same vein, you don't see any Korean companies here for the same reasons, and they are the world no. 1 connected country (60% have broadband to homes)

Pity!
It would be nice to have some [Japanese] in this forum, Koreans also.
Actually most of the young [Japanese] I met do speak English, some very fluently.
So I don't think it's a language problem.

well 777... the use of the term "jap" is derogatory.

secondly, where did you meet this Japanese? If they are overseas or in US, obviously they speak it well.

Sprintserve, the use of the term "jap" is derogatory?

Maybe (probably, sorry [Japanese]) I should have said it with a smile!:)

Anyway what I mean is that they do tend to know English much better than other international travellers, and being clever people they know well how important this langauge is.
It's hard for them as it's so different, but I believe it's a matter of age, as it always is when it comes to learning.
And we all know that youngish people are more interested in technology and internet, so I think it's actually quite strange that so few users from japan join this forum...if any!

Yes it is, and I don't think using a smiley makes it any less offensive.

Edited. And the Japanese. even those who speak Engrish, speak far better English than I speak Japanese! I wouldn't even want to know what they'd call my 'Japanese' (Japangrish?) Point being, my Korean is atrocious, and my guess is that my Japanese would be even worse! (My Korean is so bad that people who speak Korean can't figure out the simple words I know. They have no clue what I'm talking about :( )

Japanese are keen to produce server hardware not websites.

I believe that when it comes to commercial ventures, Japan still has a very insular attitude. Companies providing Web hosting there will be very focused on the local market, and few natives would be seeking services outside of Japan, or at least outside of the Pacific Rim.

Having said that, we certainly do have some Nihonjin customers. Although I suspect providers on the US West Coast would have more of them.

Lol... That got censored.....
Dou Itashimashi-te :p [You are welcome]
Arigatou Gozaimasu [Thank you very much]

Anyway... :) Japan is very insular... that's the main reason. Although I think the original poster was viewing it more from the view of hosting companies (i.e. Japanaese companies selling services based out of Japan).

I am working on Korean now.... Still at the phase where I can only go "Ham Sap Hap ni da" :p

Verio always claimed to have one or more datacenters there, even pre-NTT I believe. But I've seen very little in the way of selling hosting from Japan. Maybe a little colo, that's all.

Yes. But I am sure Verio's datacenter is meant to serve Japan market, or perhaps some MNCs from US going to be based in Japan.

If you could PM me the link to the company in Japan, that'd be great. I have a friend who lives there, and a Japan company would probably be a lot easier for her!

You mean a local webhosting company in Japan? There's quite a lot... I just googled it at www.google.co.jp and www.yahoo.co.jp. Lots to choose from. You may ask your friend to do the same.

Does it really have to be google.co.jp? AFAIK a second level google domain just changes the language the site is displayed in, not the search results -- right?

Not if you tick the option "Japanese sites only" ;)

Yes, but we don't know which webhosting company is good or bad, we don't japanese.

That's exactly right. We don't know. Given that we are all not in Japan now, Brianne's friend have a higher chance than us of finding that out.
