I only have experience with one uk host and that's lycos.co.uk
It was expensive and I thought I was paying for the extra service and support,( this is before I came across jaguarpc which host my other sites). Their support is terrible, you often wait 24hrs for a reply, and when they do reply they can barely be bothered to string together a sentence.

I won't be renewing my hosting with lycos.

I think one of the problems I find (as a UK host) is the extortionate price for bandwidth here. Many UK hosts actually have their boxes in the States because of this. I have some there myself and it's becoming increasingly cost effective to continue with and expand that policy.

If someone can tell me where I can get a server with 400GB a month piped into it for $99 in the UK, I'll go for it!

I wouldn't say bandwidth was extortionate over here, you just need to know where to look, certainly you're not going to get Cogent like pricing at the moment, but non the less pricing isn't extortionate.

I guess it depends what you call extortionate. 50GB/Mth in the UK can easily cost the same as 400GB/Mth in the US. That makes the UK 8x as expensive. That's extortionate in my view.

I'm sure it'll get better here over the coming years, but we've still got a way to go.

Depends where you shop for your bandwidth. Without even negotiating I can get prices per Mbit that are only 60% more than Cogent, but without all the mad round the block routing that often happens with cogent.

Just as another thought, have you ever considered that UK hosts are being a bit more sensible and don't want to bet the farm on most people not using their full data transfer allocation? Some of these companies doing 300-500GB a month would soon not be offering it if the majority started using that full amount.
