Hello,

Have anyone tried building a powerful server in a 1U server case?

The 1U case I am looking at has 8 x 40mm ball-bearing fans.
http://www.twinipc.com.tw/RMC1M.HTM

The 1U has 200watts power supply, not reduntant.

Do you think this 1U case or 1U case in general can handle these spec.

- Intel STL2 motherboard w/ dual 1000Mhz CPU
- 1GB SDRAM
- (2) 73GB Ultra160 Quantum Hard drives (SCSI)

I want to make sure if 8 x 40mm ball-bearing fans are enough to cool down such a powerful server.

I want to make sure this stuffy 1U case has enough fans and space to cool down the heat.

seems to me that you better go with their 2u box. p4 needs 300watts power source i believe. also you should check http://www.servercase.com they have some cases that are actually p4 ready.
just my 2 cents

also company i'm building site for sells customized servers at crazy prices, but their site isn't finished yet sorry :(

We just put one together for a customer in 1 RU that is similar to that Asia. Dual P-III 800, 512 RAM, 1 36 gig SCSI IBM.

Issues that you could run into.

Fans that come with the CPU's are too tall. Have to order special low profile cpu/sink.

RAID controllers wont fit. We didn't need one.

2 hard drives could be an issue depending on length of the case.

The server right now is averaging 7 (2100 GB) mbps for the last week with no downtime at all.

Good luck and Best Regards,

Sorry I forgot the case has a 200 watt power supply and those tiny fans also. Thats why a chilly data center is a must :).

I agree :) p3 all the way. P4 has not proved anything to me to make the change.

No problem Deeboy,

Here you go.

Oops,

Those fans are for socket not slot p-III's. I missed that in your post deeboy. Um how could you do a low profile slot 1 Fan? Hmm

Yeah, the problem would be more of fitting the processor into the case. Not the fan. I think almost all the 1U systems I've seen/used use socket-based processors.

yeah well tell that to ibm, in the netfinity 4000r they used p3 slot 1s its connects laying flat to the back of the motherboard. that's why i'm chucking it, can't find the parts and ibm states that it's a depot box with no part listing. SHAME ON THEM, i will never by a propritary box again! even if i could find parts they want a arm, leg and my first born to buy it :) expensive piece of junk.

Holy cow ... makes my servers look tiny :) Just wonderring, how much CPU Load (Average) does the server utilize, with this much total transfer?

And no downtime? good job!!

cheers,

Well, both P3 and P4 are similar in price (actually, P3 1Ghz is more expensive than P4 1.4Ghz) ... so, it won't hurt to use P4 as a server, except ... I don't know of anybody who has succesfully build a 1U P4 servers :)

Now this has got to be one of the highest performance servers in a 1U case ever:

I certainly wouldn't mind taking one for a spin, but I imagine it gets a little warm so a chilly DC is a must have for sure.
