When does a domain need an IP address instead of being name based?

What sort of difference in price should there be between an account with an IP address and one that is named based?

A domain needs a seperate ip if it uses one of the following:

-SSL (secure certificate)
-Anonymous FTP

I think thats about it, but correct me if I left something out.

I can't tell you about the difference in price 'cause I've never considered offering those two addtitional services.

:) Yeah, I see a lot of hosting sites that offer IP based hosting say that name based hosting does not work in some browsers... I'd like to know who still uses a 1.0 browser at this point in time.

Also, if someone is using a 3rd party DNS service, they may need to point their site to a dedicated IP address. Also an IP is needed for nameservers, of course. Other than those and the reasons above, I can think of any others.

I agree about the SSL, but not about anonymous FTP.

On our shared IPs, anon FTP works fine.
