I am planning on having two servers. One of them will be just for development purposes and the other will be my live web server.
Am I supposed to buy a Windows 2000 Server license for each of those machines, or is there some kind of better deal for my development server?
Aloha yes you will have to buy two but you can always for your development box get a MSDN subscription that will give you everythign Microsoft makes comes on like 100 + CD's or a bunch of dvds
allows you to run whatever you like on a dev box
http://msdn.microsoft.com/default.asp
you may also get indivisual developing lic for pieces of software

Or you could do what a friend of mine does and have eval copies that you have to reinstall every couple of months. But not everyone is a nut and wants to drive to the colo every couple of months and sit there for 2-3 hours to reinstall windoze.

i thought you had to do that anyways ??

the MSDN subscription is great, se get it at the company i work for, although you have to prove the server is for "internal use only" thus the DN stands for Developer Network
otherwise, wouldnt everyone go out and buy it instead of the real thing?
so think about it 1 copy of Win2000 Server lets say $500
then a copy of the MSDN, i think about $1500 anybody know the price?
does that follow logic?, plus the $1500 is only for 1 year, you have to pay it again the next year

The full thing is about $1700 at buy.com
http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=20002215&loc=273
That gives you pretty much everything microsoft makes to develop with, but I don't think you are allowed to use the OS's for production servers, they are just development licenses.

My mistake. That's the upgrade apparently. The full version is $2100.

Actually, if all you want a MSDN sub for is the software you can get it for about $699.99 direct from Microsoft.
That is for a one year subscription.

you may also want to look at the "Microsoft Direct Access" scheme, you may find it useful and alot cheaper than the full MSDN.
the details will me on the Microsoft Site, i think its under www.microsoft.com/directaccess/
