Hi Guys,

We're thinking about installing either Debian or FreeBSD on our new server, but we have a little hard time deciding. I would like to know why you would suggest either one of them?

(Please do not come with comments on other versions of Linux/Unix or other OS's).

Thank you.

I voted for BSD, as that's the OS we use on the majority of our servers and it's been great. I personally haven't used Debian, but I know people who have used both Debian & FreeBSD. The opinion I've generally received is that most prefer FreeBSD over Debian.

Debian is much better than other (*cough* redhat *cough*) linuxes, but it still suffers from being built around the linux kernel. I think anyone who has taken a course on operating system design will be able to tell you that the BSD kernel is much better designed than the linux kernel.

A case could be made for combining the FreeBSD kernel with the Debian userland, but I think that out of the readily available options FreeBSD is superior.

i must admit i have not installed or used debian on any server...strictly freebsd :) so, although one sided--freebsd has offered no REASON to try others!
