I don't know how everyone feels about tower servers, but this seems to be a great deal! (note I have nothing to do with either of these companies, this forum just seemed most appropriate)

Planet Z 06-06-2001, 10:41 PM Wow, can't beat the price... a $500 box w/ SCSI and dual proc MB.
If space isn't an issue, it seems like a great deal.
Timothy 06-06-2001, 11:31 PM LOL So you can basically buy one of these for the price of one month on alot of dedicated plans and then colocate it for almost nothing. :)
I actually might pick up a few of these (with more RAM and some other things of course).
cbaker17 06-06-2001, 11:57 PM umm im 99% sure that 400.00 instant rebate requires you to sign up for 3 years of MSN Internet Access

It usually does. But I didn't see ANY mention of it whatsoever on the page... so... it would be rather fraudulent if it did. Normally it's made pretty clear if it does.

Doesn't say anything about that anywhere on their site... at least that I can find. If they try and make me sign up for MSN, they'll have to cancel my order... :) I'll keep everyone informed.

Nope, there's no mention of it. I read on another forum that a number of people ordered this over the phone and got the same deal.
I'm 100% sure eBay will be flooded with these in a couple weeks :D
cbaker17 06-07-2001, 12:11 AM hmm maybe im wrong
Dogma 06-07-2001, 12:13 AM You should contact Shang and get his dad @ Gateway to get you a few for free, seeing as how he has more then 50 of them..............oh wait, he has a reseller account. :D :D
Just having fun, looks like a great deal!!
BY the way, anyone knows why is there a $400 rebate? Will this server be good for hosting? You pay like extra $100 a month for tower server compared to 1U and over the long term, is it worth it? Maybe for a home desktop
netrose 06-07-2001, 12:52 AM This is the fine print on the customization page:
TO AVOID BEING CHARGED A MONTHLY FEE, CANCEL BEFORE ONE-YEAR PERIOD ENDS. One-year period begins 30 days from receipt of system. You may incur surcharges even during promotional period for premium services, or long distance charges on your phone bill, depending on location and calling plan. Communication surcharges may also apply with some access numbers and in AK. Non-local access via 1-888# 10¢ per minute. New U.S. members, 18 and older only. Major credit card or checking account required and will be provided to AOL at registration. Use may be limited, especially during peak usage. Click here for details and access numbers, or call 1-800-846-2000.
So, there is a catch. They will give out your credit card or checking account number to AOL. :D
Stay away from this "deal".

That's for systems that include the one year of AOL for free. Plus, once Gateway charges your card for the system, as a precaution you could just have your credit card company change the card number....
Oh well, if this works out, it's one hell of a deal. :)

BC,
I'm in Aussie too, could we like get a host to order for us and colocate there? Or anyone in US knows how much to DHL a server to Aussie since i have a friend in US :)
Hostking 06-07-2001, 12:49 PM I called them and no there isn't a MSN or AOL catch. Max quantity is 10 at a time. If you want to talk to a very nice salesperson talk to Desiree@gateway. They didn't happen to agree to give you $25 off your next system every time someone orders, did they? :D
I know Gateway's made me that offer before...
Hostking 06-07-2001, 01:49 PM Sorry no $25 off (I just talked to her (and a Tech) again to find out motherboard specs).
Here is the mainboard.
http://www.asus.com/products/Motherboard/Pentiumpro/Cur-dls/index.html
Could easily fit that into a 2U case.

i called and they told me that I doNot need to sign up for an internet service but you have to have a business...
My rep(Rachel) told me...10 servers max..

Fremont Servers 06-07-2001, 02:08 PM Wow,
That is a good motherboard.
If Intel doesn't have STL2, I would have gone for that motherboard for my 2U server.
Pist me off because this deal comes in a wrong time for me.
- Asia
Infact i just checked that the mobo cost about US600 alone. Are Gateway gone crazy with that $400 off? I mean you could just buy the server and dismantle everything like what HostKing is planning since he said could easily fit that into 2U. Dont forget you get 9GB SCSI and 128 RAM and that 933mhz processor.
Did they say anything about it is only available to business customer ONLY or anyone could just buy it? By the way, this gateway server is classified as mid tower server?

that is what my rep. told me and she asks me if i have one and i told her , we have a small webhosting company and gave her a URL too :)
I'll keep you posted on what's up.

Fremont Servers 06-07-2001, 02:38 PM For the motherboard, I think they can get it for much cheaper than $600. ( hense, quanitity discounts)
- Asia
Fremont Servers 06-07-2001, 02:39 PM Also,
$600 is for Retail.
How do you know if it is not OEM?

Hostking 06-07-2001, 02:47 PM Pricewatch.com had the boards for $350. Not that it matters.
Best Regards,
JeremyL 06-07-2001, 03:22 PM I would not order one of these at all,
99.99% chance that they are refurbished. I ordered a refurbished comp from gateway and when it got here, it's cdrom drive didn't work. I called them to get it replaced under warranty and originally they wre going to mail me a new one and send a return packing slip so I could return the old one. Then they looked up and found out I had a refurbished system and they told me now I would have to mail in the whole freaking box in for them to fix it (not just the cdrom). It would cost me almost as much to ship it as the damn cdrom is worth.
JMHO
DHWWnet 06-07-2001, 03:31 PM They might be refurbished....
I just talked to my rep and she told me that they're new.
I will be expecting my servers by next week, so they say ....

Again, I haven't bought one of these and have no personal experience with this exact system. HOWEVER, if a system is refurbished it almost ALWAYS is stated as such. Most reputable companies will not try to pass off a refurbished machine as NEW (the gateway site says nothing about this particular box being refurbished).

John_rwx 06-07-2001, 06:34 PM Mine is also estimated to arrive on the 18th. I'm trying hard not to order another one of these. I think it's a great deal!
Not a big issue for me, but the Asus CUR-DLS motherboard in these requires "Registered" SDRAM. It's only a few dollars more according to Crucial's site. Just letting you know in case you were planning on using extra SDRAM's you might have laying around.
Before anyone asks what "registered" memory is, here is the description from Crucial's FAQ.
The term "registered" refers to how the memory module processes signals. Registered modules contain a register that delays all information transferred to the module by one clock cycle. This type of memory is primarily used in servers and was designed for modules with 32 or more chips on them to help ensure that data is properly handled.
Just wondering why elijah tax is higher than jkehe tax? Elijah paid $84 for 2 system and jkehe paid $28 for 1. Elijah, did they mischarged you for 3 system instead?
Hostking 06-07-2001, 08:20 PM Nice John,
Thanks for the heads up. Ours is arriving on the 15th or before. I want to check it out before we buy more.
Best Regards,

Tax is different in different states.
I paid 5% South Carolina Sales Tax.
560 * 0.05 = 28.00
He paid 7.5% sales tax, because of where he is located.
1120 * 0.075 = 84.00
Regards,
Could anyone confirm if anyone could just buy it or you need a business?
For those who bought it, could you do me a favour. Once it arrived, could you post the dimension of the box and its weight here. Thanks.
DHWWnet 06-07-2001, 08:56 PM Jkehe is right , i pay around 7-8% in tax (well my dad pays for it )
Correct me if i'm wrong, Gateway no longer offers the $400 instant rebate....

Shoot! It was great while it lasted.
Thanks to JG for posting this special.
I bought 11 at the good price if anyone wants one. :)
Hostking 06-07-2001, 10:56 PM Right on Jeff. I already checked out the parts. Those will fit in a 2U just fine. Wish I had bought more and not wanted to test one first. Oh well.....
Best Regards,
John_rwx 06-08-2001, 03:54 PM The $400 off special promotion is still valid!!!
It's just been taken of the web order page. Now, you have to call Gateway or visit a Gateway Country store. Check out the link for details:
http://www.gatewayatwork.com/gw_atwork/promotion/6400server/index.shtml
John_rwx 06-08-2001, 10:40 PM As I mentioned above, the $500 Server deal is still available if you call Gateway.
The Anandtech.com forum has a couple of threads about this deal. The oldest thread is around 28 pages long now. There is some good info on a coupon code that may drop the price a few more dollars.
More important for this post, however, is a link to some pictures put up by someone who received his server today. It's a large page and slow over a modem.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=40&threadid=461310
For those still interested, the coupon code is SOL50 for extra $50 off. And the advice is to call home sales instead of the business division.
Many people seems to cancel their order & reordered from what i read in anandtech.
DHWWnet 06-09-2001, 12:57 AM We bought 3 more ...
I can't wait for mine to arrive....I'm thinking of installing freeBSD ......instead of RH7.1.
Thanks JG for the heads up on these extremely good deal and DJ i'm going to call on monday to see if i can use that additional $50 off.
FYI: the deal is still ON, i think you have to call them at 1-800-846-5211 ...
cheers,

go LakerS go!
Chicken 06-09-2001, 02:27 AM I have to decide if I want this before I go on vacation. But I might just get it as a home sys. This would work as a home system, eh?

:D
DHWWnet 06-09-2001, 02:42 AM Yes , you can :D

If you weren't aware, Dell announced that they would start price gouging the competition around last week and gateway countered saying they would do it too. if you are in the market for a new computer, I suggest you get one while this gouging is taking place.
Just wanted to add that dell is offering a "buy 3 servers get one free" deal here: http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfb/default.htm also free shipping looks like
<<MOD NOTE: REFURBISHED BUSINESS SOLUTIONS section>>
NetRemedy 06-09-2001, 08:50 PM "JUST" ordered one from CANADA - called Gateway, Home sales, purchased unit at 500 US.
Paid 100 shipping
Paid PST and GST (Canadian Taxes)
Total order was 986.00 CANADIAN or 649.00 US delivered to our door in Canada
They are no customs or brokerage fees as they ship to their warehouse in Canada and then ship from there.
Total with tax, shipping and system only $989 Canadian
ETA was 1 to 2 weeks though :(
Hostking 06-09-2001, 08:59 PM Chicken,
That would be a great system for home use other than the video card (and relatively small HD nowdays). It would rip other than that. I was thinking the same thing, problem is I just upgraded to a tbird 1.1 very inexpensively. 2 home systems is sounding very good right now though.
Best Regards,
Get-Hosted.com 06-09-2001, 11:05 PM This is a great deal, I also found out it uses this motherboard: http://www.asus.com.tw/products/Motherboard/Pentiumpro/Cur-dls/index.html
So telling people mentioning Abit was wrong, they were actually pretty close. There is also a deal on some 10K 18GB SCSI HDDS for $90 going around.
Anyone knows if this server is considered mid-tower or full-tower for co-location?
Thanks

Mike, if the video card is for games, then I don't care. the small HD is an issue, but I could add another. Some cheapie IDE 40 gig thing from local store. I don't know much about ram, but the other forum listed someting about crucial 256 that sounded good.
I also have a 1U case (actually server), but i think I'm going to sell it to pay for this computer. The wife would get too pissed if I bought this and had a spare server, and another 1U *and* the laptop. :(
Aloha
not sure I mentioned something on Micron memory
one thing is go here http://www.ebates.com (http://www.ebates.com/index.jsp?referrer=partners@happyfish.com)
ebates is great I have got a average of $35 a year on purchases anyway it gives ya an extra 5% off the purchase on memory
pick up SDRAM, PC133 • CL=2 • Registered • ECC • 7.5ns • 3.3V • 32Meg x 72
part # CT32M72S4R7E
$72.99 a piece
man want to get one of these for home use would be cool to have for a file server box stick a couple big HD on it
jericho 06-12-2001, 02:51 PM An update on this deal in case you didn't know...
I just ordered one of these today. They are still running the offer, my sales rep said not to wait as the deal may not be around much longer (not sure how true that is). They have been overwhelmed with orders and my estimated shipping date is September. Still worth the wait in my opinion. Also, I was reading some of the threads on anandtech.com about applying another coupon to save even more on the server but I was told that you could only use 1 promotion - of course I chose the 400.00 promotion and chose the cheaper warranty -100.00 My total was 590.00 including shipping (60.00) and tax.

4 months for shipping? That's pretty bad.
Ten of mine don't come until July 7 or something close to that. :(

my servers are suppose to arrive here in cali this Friday! they've extended it until next week b/c they are short on mobo's...
my rep told me that our first 2 servers will arrive on or b4 the 19th. However, the additional ones will be here sometime next month.
cheers,

Hopefully ours arrive this week.

JapAniManga.ch 06-13-2001, 02:45 PM Hi,
can anybody please tell My a E-Mail-Adress of a Sales-Rep. of Gateway then I also ordered via Website one Server but I get on every E-Mail-Adress I write no Answer :( I tried <Hostking> Sales-Rep "Desiree@gateway.com" but get a '.. this Adress have a fatal Error .. ' back.
Little Info: I'm from Switzerland, but I dont want to Export the Server (will colocate it in a US-NOC). Paying is also no Problem for My (have Eurocard/Mastercard and VISA) so I think it should be possible that a Non-US-Customer can also get one or what do you think
Hostking 06-13-2001, 07:16 PM Marco,
Here you go Desiree.Cabinte@gateway.com . I hope that helps. Drop me a email if you need a place to store that server ;).
Best Regards,
jericho 06-13-2001, 08:40 PM HostKing,
Yes, I think that even if it does take 4 months for the servers to be delivered that approx $600.00 total for a server with these specs is still going to be a VERY good deal. Also, I really doubt if it takes 4 months, they are always very conservative on their delivery dates. I've always received my computers from Gateway earlier than expected.

Thanks for the correct E-Mail Adress, will try on it.
My order ship date was delayed from June 18 to August 30, so I cancelled the order. My ship date on 10 of them is still early July, and if they push that back, I'll probably cancel that too...
DHWWnet 06-16-2001, 02:11 AM *update*
My servers was suppose to be here Today! the 15th and they moved it to the 19th, the reason is they ran out of mobo's.
Yesterday, they bumped it to the 21st for some delayed ordered parts and stuff.
Today, my sales rep. called me and she said, it will be shipped on the 25th via 2nd day air (NO charge), so I should be getting it between 28th/29th for sure :bawling:
Get-Hosted.com 06-16-2001, 03:07 AM In 4 months they won't be such a sweet deal.
Prices on all of the parts will have gone down significantly, how much they go down is what counts though.
Fremont Servers 06-16-2001, 04:15 AM They must have zillion of orders. :D
JapAniManga.ch 06-19-2001, 05:49 AM Hi,
I also did not get any Answer from Desiree or other Sales-Person about My Order :bawling:
big_smooth 06-19-2001, 01:36 PM Has anyone actually received their order?
I don't see the $400 discount on the site, I may be blind...
Obviously I'm not as experienced as you guys, but from my eyes it seems fishy that they keep pushing back the shipping dates....What do you guys thing? Am I just paranoid?
John_rwx 06-19-2001, 04:43 PM Several people on the Anandtech.com forum have received theirs and are pleased with the computer. The estimated delivery for my computer has been pushed back to June, 29th. I'm going to hang in there and wait, I still think it was a great deal.

You have to call in.
Well, I just thought I'd let everyone know that I received my first Gateway at the $500 price on Friday. :) Looking for 10 more this week hopefully. If not, the order will be cancelled.

cperciva 07-02-2001, 02:40 AM Just in case anyone hasn't seen this (http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1003-200-6417108.html?tag=mn_hd) yet I thought I'd point it out.
Evidently Gateway rather, err, underestimated the demand for cheap hardware.
JBIZ718 07-07-2001, 03:55 AM Ill be buying 3 of these soon
WHat a deal
Joe
DHWWnet 07-07-2001, 04:15 AM mine should be here any time by now. They upgraded it to ship the next day for free.

Oh well.. can't complain much on a $500 server.
Thanks for the link Cperciva :)

JBIZ718 07-10-2001, 11:38 PM In reading recent articles about servers it seems alot of companies are just giving up on them.
Hello, I'm not very familar with colocation, but it is possible to buy a tower pc, send it to a company, (colocate it) and then just pay the amount they cost per gig?
For example, say, jkehe says he'll colocate these towers for free, paying $2 a gig minimum 50 gigs. So all I would have to pay is for the tower, shipping and handling, send it to jkehe, and then pay him however much bandwidth I use?
Wow, if that's what i think it is...that's a god damn good deal. The URL above doesn't work for me...could someone gimme the right one? I think they shut down that page because people were buying too many of them =) Geez you guys, I wanted one too.
Does anyone here supply a fixed 2-4mb/sec line?
Aye, one last question. Could this P3 933MHZ with say, 512RAM support at peak times, over 1.5mb/sec? Probably use more than 400 gigs a month. Do you think this server could take it?
Oh yeah, does anyone colocate towers for very cheap with no setup fee?
Thanks for taking your time on answering all my questions.
Regards, Andrew

Agrees :)...I don't know much either.
Get-Hosted.com 07-11-2001, 01:22 AM It would be a great home system.

A quote from the Apache people comes to mind here (this was 2 or 3 years ago, so it's paraphrased): "Apache is designed for correctness, not for speed [...] When serving static content Apache can saturate a T1 line on a low-end Pentium."
To answer your question, if your content is purely static, you could handle much more than 1.5Mbps; if your content is dynamic, it depends entirely upon the cpu power used by the dynamic portion of your site(s).
cbaker17 07-11-2001, 11:27 AM Dynamic and static, sound like a load of hooey :)
When you get down to it its all bits of data, simple switches, the only reason dynamic would require more cpu is because dynamic data is larger media, hence it needs more bandwidth hence the computer has to pump those bits of data out faster....

the boxes are here.
I'm going to use the other box for personal stuff and was considering using the other box for Free hosting , i need some suggestions
Do you think it would be a good idea to offer Free hosting ? Although, I will Not guarantee the uptime but was wondering if there should be some downtime, will it affect the reputation of Our hosting company ?
I was thinking of doing 50MB space with cgi, ssi, asp, php, mysql, cold fusion, oracle, etc... free
Thanks

none , i don't pay for anything my brother does and since there is some extra space at the local NOC, i think i can squeeze the box in there.. i'm not going to host thousands of sites , maybe a couple hundred :)
initially, it'll be on 1Mbps.
what i was trying to say, is that, i will try my best to have an uptime of 99% but what if the hardware fails?
then it might take a few days to rebuild the box again and will that affect the reputation of our hosting site ? I will make it clear that it is a separate thing.
Thanks.

b/c i want to learn all kinds of things... and this will be my research and development server :)
Aloha
wellI guess if it is for free then no one can really complain to much if they read that
maybe what you can try is todo stuff in your own area for peoples homepages etc... as kind of a good will thing
might be a way to build your name up in your local area or peer group ???
cool ya get to put it somewhere for free that is super cool ;)

Justin S 07-13-2001, 05:03 PM They don't have it listed on their site anymore. I'm not even sure if they still have the offer going on. Best bet would be to give them a call and see what's up...
