View Full Version : Where to move?

Well I only have 6 months left before I have to either decide to stay in California or move. I would like to stay but the cost of living is a little high, not to mention the power problems. I am looking for a decent state to live in, in terms of cost of living and weather conditions. I don`t want to live in a big city but close to one. If anyone has any suggestions let me know. :D

Orlando is great.. Cost is not 1/2 as bad as ca. plus no power problems really unless we get a bad storm or some thing really.

But take it from me its a little hot..hehe

Ok, no where hot or with hurricanes. :D

I am in Utah right now doing a little training, there is some nice scenery here but I don`t think I could live here.

hehe, i live in NC too! ;)

We get alot of hurricane warnings... but most of the time (except the infamous hurricane hugo) it just passes by without even looking our direction

yea, the weather is good, not TOO hot nor too cold. Not too much snow where i live (Charlotte)... and Charlotte is also one of the biggest banking cities in US (err, maybe i said it wrong way but its one of those cities thats waiting for a big business boom!)

:)

New York is pretty nice, however, its getting more and more expensive everyday here. If you lived up the line, in like Rockland County, you could get some good deals. Nice weather and good jobs!

Nevada - thats where we're moving to this summer; not to mention the 0% taxes (:D!!). LasVegas is nice if you get bored easily. If you don't like the desert, you might want to check somewhere near Reno / Lake Tahoe Area.

And the world's best pecan pie...

Just avoid the Boston area like the plague. We've got Massholes, wicked bad traffic, a cost of living second only to Silicon Valley, and the weather is most suckalicious pretty much year around.

Only 109 out today.

Hopefully, we will be moving to North California (Silicon Valley area) in a couple of months. Anyone living there, how is it up there? From what I've seen, it's really expensive ($1400-$2500 per month for one bedroom).

Jeese, kinda wish I could remember where the article I was looking through the other day was. These people had $300k to spend on a house and went all across america looking to see what they could get for their $$$. Middle-sized housing in CA... going inland a bit the houses kept getting bigger... then when they ended up in NY... :( Little itty bitty apartment. Guess I know where I won't be moving to anytime this century.

Compared to Australia.. generally I think anywhere in the US the cost of living is higher.
and it smells worse, too. ;) bypass it all & move downunder, I say.

Chicago is a nice city. You could live on the North Side, which is nice and have access to all quickly. There is always something to do, and traveling is a snap. Good schools, good mayor and great nightlife. Winters are an adjustment, but then you realize that winter passes quickly and you can always utilize your fireplace! The suburbs of Chicago are ok, mostly populated with family units.

Funny, I am planning on moving AWAY from Chicago this summer, it was a great place to grow up but now it's time for something different.

If you want to check out rental properties and other happenings in Chicago (city proper), the best resource is the Reader (http://www.chireader.com). Online apartment listings are updated every Tuesday 5 p.m., loft spaces updated every Thursday 5 p.m., print edition released every Thursday evening.

I know it may sound odd, but Indiana is a large FCC test area(which means they have more fiber than any other state in the midwest) That alone turns me on. :)

Don't forget Texas. West, and central, Good weather, no natrual disasters, many things to do for fun, lots of internet firms and jobs. In fact there are some openings in one that I know of ;)

Um..why isn't anybody mentioning Pennsylvania? :D

If you want to be close to a city, live in Lancaster (where I am now..)

If you want to be out in the middle of nowhere, live in the Indiana, PA location (used to live there, connected at around...20 k :))

You won't regret it, the technical market for job seekers is good, the weather is awesome. We got 1 month of snow in 2001, a couple weeks in Jan and a week or two in Mar. Other then that is it awesome!

Come by and check it out!

Australia would be fun ;)
Maui is great but no real tech jobs here unless ya have your own biz.

Maui has got a lot of great things and it never gets above 100 degrees so pretty mild all year long
ya cna live upcountry where it is around 70 degrees all the time

how about Central America
I lived in the Bay Islands for a year
great people cheap
(just no medical or health care watch out for diseases)
but ya can buy waterfront carib propert for under $50,000 in the correct spots (I was going to get 5 acres for $5,000 killer waterfront when I was there but ya have to live there for it
build a house for $50,000
man your set no taxes no income taxes you own the land no property taxes food is cheap everything is cheap

I'm in Mass myself and I can definately second that one!!
Also, we use the word "wicked". :D

I've visited a few places..
Colorado Springs was one of my favorites. Fargo, North Dakota seemed decent. Vegas was too much. I like those small quiet towns that have what you need in them while you can find the action not too far away. Canada just seemed far too erie.. I can't explain it. :)

Dogma, I knew someone was going to say that. Soon after I posted, and over the news how Huston was flooded. I was honestly meaning west Texas (No Rain) and central from San Antonio and up are pretty stable locations. I agree Penn. is also good for technology.

decide what are the most important things that you enjoy, environment, temperature, things to do etc. before you move.......................the midwest is a hellhole
