Thanks for all your info, but what I mosly want is to have my own private chat, this way people chatting are all from the same town. When a host says they give out free chat rooms, are they shared by everyone else or are they just for me? Any additional help is greatly appreciated. Hey Chicken, where can I get a Java chat program. I am probrably looking for people to be chatting from 20-35 chatters simultaneusly. Thanks.

I'm not sure if you can do this with CGI or not, but check out http://www.cgi-resources.com. If you can use CGI, they will have the scripts for you to choose from.

You can, but read your host's TOS. You will most likely find that they do not allow cgi chat scripts. (CPU resource issue).
Java chats do not have this problem (as they are client side apps.), and are fine.
Hang on hang on hang on. We need to make a distinction here.
TNG mentions he'd like 'real time' chat, and also post messages. The differences here are : one is 'real time chat', where people actually chat at the same time (like IRC or Yahoo! chat rooms, etc.). The other is of course, bulletin boards like UBB, Phorum, etc.
That said, you can look for free programs of both varieties at this excellent site : http://www.hotscripts.com
You could sign up with a host like OLM (www.olm.net), some of their plans come with 25 chat rooms and you can buy more. They have a few kinds of chat rooms too.
You might like to check out this chatroom provider: http://www.infochat.com

Hey TNG, I only have one site bookmarked. it is free for up to 10 users (so it probably won't help you), but: http://www.iachat.com
The other links posted may be of more help since you are looking for more users. Also, it would be easy (of course) if your host offered this (some do as OLM does).
