View Full Version : Urgent! Need a UK based Dedicated Server - Options ? ....

For my own personal sites I use the fantastically amazingly wonderfully cool http://www.aletiahosting.com --- but my place of work (based in the UK) require a UK-based dedicated Linux/Sun Spark server, between 256-512 memory, around 10-30gig of space and generous bandwidth.

It has to be a company that's based in the UK, and they must offer phone support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.......

Any suggestions?

Anything below £1,000 a month would be ideal.......

ClaraNET and Demon both do dedicated servers. Dedicated-servers.co.uk are part of WebFusion. All are based in the UK.

All should be well within £1k/month. Why does it have to be in the UK? You could save a hell of a lot by going dedicated in the US. Places like Rackshack would cost you less than £1k per year :).

The biggest problem with UK hosts is the bandwidth they throw in - it's generally around 5-10gb. And bandwidth after that is expesive. In the US, you'll be looking at 50gb minimum. And it would still be cheaper than a UK provider

Hey, I'm sure no specialist in this, but I think concerning the 24x7 support aspect, the biger the company the better it probably is, no?

And since you want an expensive one ;) I think there's a few of those global players in the London Docklands, don't know their names though...

Well, all of my personal sites are hosted in the USA - but for the company I work for, the server HAS to be based in the UK - mainly because we do deal with very high profile UK companies.

As for Webfusion - I wouldn't touch them...we tried them late last year on a project and found their support level to be very poor ...

Thanks for the suggestion though ;)

Rackspace have a company in UK and in US, their support is great and speed is good as well. Just that they are expensive. But with you 1000 budget, you could try to contact them.

Another host that i heard is donhost.

Their pricing seems to fit your budget nicely but with low data transfer (GB) allowance. Extra 1GB at 10 pounds.

One of their plan fits you nicely.

£289.99

Pentium III 1ghz CPU
512RAM
41.1 GB harddisk
15GB data transfer

You might want to consider this one instead

£389.99

DUAL Pentium III 1ghz CPU
768RAM
61.1 GB harddisk
20GB data transfer

I recommended the higher plan because since you are sure that need higher bandwidth and this plan provide 20GB. It is more expensive by £100 but the extra 5GB already cost £50 alone. Do take note that you get additional 1ghz CPU, 256RAM and 20GB for just £50 extra.

hope this helps

get rackspace.com, I'm with them whatever problems I had I was able to contact them immediately 3am on a sunday morning too! They have some deals going on right now if you sign a 6 month contract, try this special out $150u.s a month no setup fee for 10gigs to get around 30 gigs (add $2 per gig around $40-50 more).

Wow, that looks like a really great deal!

And if I get it right, you can have more bandwidth at their normal conditions? (3$/Gig) That's really cool...

How did you find this link? I was browsing through their website but didn't find this promo page.

99.999% Uptime seems slightly exagerated though, for a box without RAID and other redundant stuff? (except if they fix the problem within minutes if something fails)

Really impressive!

Don't know where he found it, but I've seen that advertised on slashdot. Some time ago they were advertising cheap Raqs, and I was amused to see that they had "only 50 left!" for about two weeks.

On the rackspace.com site they claim that BT selected rackspace.com for their managed hosting needs (see rackspace.com home page, text right of the red bus image)

it is believe me on that I've been with them for a year, the longest is an hour they will get working at it if it's a major problem. You can always get a tape backup with it or a second hard drive and run it as a raid (but pay a little extra more though). Actually I complained about the prices being high (just give them linuxwebnet.com as a comparison) and they lowered my price to around $200 with 30gigs (and a 8gig travan tape backup included but only 64megs ram older pentium 3 though) with 6 months but someone else told me about the $150 deal link as well, they are willing to negotiate prices if you tell them but they will get you to sign a 6 month contract though.
