Hello evryone!

I have 2 boxes on the same network, Bix 1 has accounts and resellers accounts who use own name servers. and Box 2 which is a new server.
I want to move evrything from box 1 onto box2. Cpanel will do it, hopefully! howevr there are issues of concern:

1- can I grab the same IPs from box 1 to be used on box two, so that I will assign them in the same way to their sites after I move them?
**this way I will not have to worry about reseller's name servers pointing to different IPs.

2- can I use the same name servers on box 2 while they are beeing used on box1, untill I move every thing?

3-WILL THERE BE ANY DOWN TIME?

4- I am sure I am missing something!

PLEASE TRY TO HELP IF YOU CAN.

many thanks in advance

If the two boxes are connected to different routers, you might have to change IP addresses. But in doubt, ask your web host.

The last time, I requested additional IP addresses from Rackshack and they had to move my server to do so and all my IP addresses changed. I guess this would be the same for moving from one box to another.

If you do not provided dedicated IP addresses to your clients, you will just have to change the IP addresses of the Nameservers and you will do fine.

As for downtime, yes there would be if there is going to be any change. If you do not have any database then it would be easy, just keep both machine on during the changeover for at least 48 hours, you should do fine (provided all the settings are done correctly).

You can use the same name servers on the new box but you will probably have to do it manually by SSHing into your machine and manually modify the Nameserver IP assignment or else it will always revert to your existing box.

I am not sure how possible this is but you could talk to your web host about moving the existing harddisk over to the new machine and just starting up in there. Once powered up, all should start working as it should without any worries of loss of data, change of IP addresses or extended downtime. If not, just have them move that harddisk and you copy everything from the old harddisk to the new one. Just a thought. This way, since both machine are on the same network, you will not need to use unnecessary bandwidth and be very certain that everything would be as it was. That's how they do restore anyways.
