I wouldn't use .htaccess for adult site. Personally I hate adult site because it attracts a lot of hackers that want a free account... plus .. use a lot of bandwidth.

I'd try using sql server that using private address ..and use that for authentication. Also use session management to beef up the security.... one account and session only.

authentix is a package for NT/2k (dont think it covers other os but i may be wrong) boxes which gives u shed loads of options for passowrd protection. Bloody good defence against hacking and code grabbing as well.
