View Full Version : Max Httpds and BW with 512 Ram?

Hi, I have just upgraded one of my servers to 512 ram(for some reason the box wouldn't take the 3rd 256chip). The box serves up static html and I am wondering what is a safe highlimit for max httpds to set in apache. The box is a p3 866 scsi 10k 18gig drive. Also how much bandwidth do you think that could handle with this setup......Thanks in advance. Forgot to add the box is running FreeBSD 4.2 and apache 1.3.19

That actually sounds like a LOT of RAM for what you describe.

Since your server is already in use, what is the actual RAM usage? that is the only real way to know... I'd be surprised if you were using more than 128MB for Apache :)

RAM Limit
============
Your system based on Intel 815 or 810 chipset? They only take 512MB of RAM, even if they have 3 slots (same as all my 1U servers). Intel doesn't want you using these in servers :) They don't make enough profit.

Bandwidth
=============
static HTML -- depending on the quality of your network and associated drivers -- a 866Mhz machine should be able to pump 100Mbps all the way full... especially if large downloads or graphics. I suspect you will run into collision problems before you "run out" of bandwidth on the machine.
What is your pattern of usage? Lots of tiny HTML pages, large files for download? Rapid back/forth from client? Thousands of users at same time, peak periods?

Ive used up most of my 128 on my other server with apache. Wanted to be safe on this box :) and now knowing that the board only takes 512 max explains alot heh. Thanks for the info and I dont plan on running out with 512, I suspect I can get 5-10Mbit easy from this setup after seeing what I got from my other box.

Try Intel STL2 ServerBoard.
You can add up to 4GB in memory.

Hm... that does not seem to make sense, does it? How does Intel know whether you are going to use it in as a server or as a desktop PC anyway? ;) Besides, i810, i815, and i820 chipset from Intel are not actually targeted for servers ...

Actually, for some reasons, some motherboardsc will allow you to use all the memory slots if you use PC100 memory and only all but one slot for PC133 memory. Not sure the reason why... One good example is Tyan Tiger 200 ( http://www.tyan.com/products/html/tiger200_p.html ) using VIA Apollo Pro 133A (definitely not Intel's :) ) as its chipset. Has 4 memory dimm slots. If you use PC100, the motherboard will take up to 2GB of memory (4x512MB, 8 banks) but if you use PC133, it will only take 1.5GB of memory (3x512MB, 6 banks).

So I bet you use PC133 memory ... and as for StephenRS, I know you use PC133 :) ... But for sure, it's not because of Intel! ;)

cheers,

BTW, what motherboard is this anyway? Some motherboards do allow setting that let the CPU to run at 133 Mhz FSB and the memory to run at 100Mhz FSB. If your motherboard also allow this, can you do a quick check and see if you run your memory at 100Mhz, will you be able to utilize the last memory slot? Anyway, this is just my guess as to why the type of memory (PC100/PC133) does make difference on some motherboards ... I wonder what would happen if I start mixing these different types of memory on this motherboard ;)

Tyan Thunder 2500 (S1867) with Server Works' Server Set III HE chipset will allow you to add up to 8GB (PC133) memory :D ... It can take dual Intel CPU (Slot 1) too ... woa :D
