View Full Version : Searching for Good Personal Site Host

My long-time school-provided email and web hosting will be going away soon because of unavoidable graduation :), so I’m in the market for something new. Rather than being faced with having to change my email address and URL every few years whenever I change ISPs, I would rather be able to register a domain that I could take with me wherever I go.

I'm also looking for a place to host a club site. Although slightly different sites, the needs are similar, so it could be the same place.

Here's what I have in mind:

I need a host for my personal website, and probably websites and email for my immediate family as well (at least 5-10 POP3 addresses, preferably with the ability to manage them myself). I'll also need POP3 or IMAP email access, preferably with SMTP access as well (although this is optional). Since my personal site will be acting as a digital portfolio for my work, there should be plenty of space for images, video, and executables (at least 50-75 MB). In all probability, no one else with a site under this account will have such needs. Bandwidth is less of a concern. It would be fine (preferred, even) if other sites had URLs such as www.mydomain.com/mywife (http://www.mydomain.com/mywife) or /mykids (someday), but that’s not a major concern. The ability to run my own CGI stuff is almost an absolute necessity, and I’d like to have Perl, Python, and Java capabilities as well. FTP and Telnet/SSH access are musts, therefore so is a UNIX-based host (I would greatly prefer UNIX anyway). No ads, please, and no adult stuff unless they can guarantee me an IP that won’t get me blocked.

The club site (under a separate account and domain) will be similar, except without the space requirements and with more email needs, since we’d like to give @clubname.com addresses to our members (could easily grow to several dozen). Mailing lists (either distribution or majordomo/listserv) and discussion forums would be good additions for this site.

My problem is that most major non-free, no-ad web hosts are geared almost exclusively toward businesses. Most of them also have policies that seem to prohibit anything that could be construed as sharing accounts, such as having multiple more-or-less independent sites, as I would like to have. Since I won’t be making any money off of either of these sites, the costs will have to be low – like $15/month or less (preferably < $10). Handholding support also isn’t needed.

As you can see, I have a pretty specific idea of what I want. I’ve been shopping around for several weeks now, though, and all the hosts and terms and plans and amounts and contracts are beginning to run together. Any input from others who have needed and found places to meet similar needs will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hostrocket deleted the post that was questionable, and thus there is no need for my (somewhat harsh) post to remain here.

Thank you. :)

hmmm
Relax a little bit boys... this is not a war, its just yet another host trying to get customers.

Althought I don't like the way he does it, I understand why he does it ;)

Tip to the host trying to get customers... stop doign that, you'll only get bad stuff from it. Be good at what you do and if you do pub, do it the right way with banners and similar stuff...

enjoy!

You might want to try Annette's www.hostmatters.com (http://www.hostmatters.com)

I like to stick with smaller webhosts because the large hosts don't care about you or your needs.

A company like Annette's will be there for you when you need them on a personal level.

I'd pump my own company but since I haven't done that yet on any forum, I won't start now.

Small correction: http://www.hostmatters.com will get you there - we're in the process of reassigning the IP that hostingmatters.com was pointed to, and trying that hostname takes you to one of our clients' under construction page at the moment.

Tabernack,

Good for you... We have the same philosophy. I know we could increased business if we would put plugs in our messages but we choose not to. Too many hosts just come on here to answer a few questions just so everyone can see the plug in their signature. We come on here to discuss matters, not advertise.

Try www.futurequest.com. (http://www.futurequest.com.) I currently have one site hosted there, and plan to move the rest when my current hosting contract is up. They are not the cheapest host around, but you get what you pay for.

Actually, Gecko, most Alabanza hosts will fit the bill.

Annette's HostMatters is highly recommended; FutureQuest has fantastic support particularly around the forums; my host Below10Host @ http://www.below10host.com have what you need; HostCaters might also be able to help @ http://www.hostcaters.com

Hope this helps....

Thanks for your input, everyone. I think I've narrowed my list of prospective hosts down to about ten, so the next step will be to contact each one individually with any specific needs or questions I have that aren't covered in the FAQ or ToS docs on their sites.

It'll be a couple of weeks before I make any decisions, since I have a wedding and honeymoon coming up :D, but I'll be sure to post a synopsis of my findings for anyone who may be dealing with similar issues.

I now realize that, ultimately, the only way I'm going to be completely happy is to set up my own personal server at home, but that's not really an option at the moment. Ah, but someday.... ;)

Thanks again!
