View Full Version : CPU usage on a RaQ3 what should it be at?

I would say they are not 10% correct. Owning a raq, this is the thing that made us want to get any other kind of server ASAP ;)

Raqs are fine WHEN they are working properly... wich happens until you register over 50 domains with them (previous experience).

In any case, your CPU usage should keep its average under 1 and everything will be fine and happy.

My CPU usage stays at or around 0.07 to 0.15 at peak hours what should it stay at for a normal site or what would be considered high? I have a few cgi scripts runing on it to......something i've noticed since i got a raq is that it says i use less GB a day then what my other host said why is that and no my traffic hasn't changed :)

.07 isn't too bad. If it runs at say 10 to 20% constantly, consider getting a second RaQ and moving sites to the second one. The occasional spike to 20% is not uncommon. Or consider going to a real (I mean Pentium) server. The RaQ has an AMD 300Mhz (I think) chip.

Typically CGI is what will drain your CPU, not page requests.

Do not pay to close attention to the RaQ stats, they are not 100% accurate.

When you say 20% do you mean 20.00? I only have 3 domains on it for now.

20% is 0.20 (unless they've changed something I didn't know about). You seem to be running 7-15% (15% being your peak usage).

If it isn't accurate though, then... well...

Chicken, I think that when you run TOP, it's listed in percentage, so a .07 is .07%. At least that's how it shows on mine.

It depends on what you are referring to. If you are referring to CPU states than this is shown in % so .07 = .07% (as in TOP)

If you are referring to load averages than this is something completely different. Load averages are the average number of processes ready to run. This is normally shown in the format:

[past 1 minute], [past 5 minutes], [past 15 minutes]

So when you see a load average output like:

1.03, 0.08, 0.05

It means that in the last 1 minute, an average of 1.03 processes were ready to run, and so on.....

What I want to know is what is an acceptable CPU state over a long period of time. Or, better put, when should I start to look for a second server, at 20%, 30%, 5%,....??? I guess I will notice when my webpages start to take forever to load or when my scripts take minutes instead of seconds. :)

Diana,

Telnet to your server, then run the command top.

You can also telnet in and do vmstat (number), which will give you information as well - only this time it will give your CPU idle (i.e., the percentage of time your CPU is waiting for something). So if you run
vmstat 5

it will give you a line every 5 seconds. The last column is CPU id, which is the idle percentage.

TOP will give you more detailed information about current processes, though.
