Currently I have a buyer who want my domain.
I would like to know whats the best way to do the deal?
I dont want my domain being transfered without recieving the payment. Also are they any cost for transfer ownership of a domain?? Do i Just give him my user ID and password and he go change everything? I am very new this sort of thing. Some advice will be appreciated.
Thanks advance

it really depends on your registrar... the best thing to do in this case i think is emailing your registrar and asking them directly.
good luck :)

Do not transfer ownership until you recieve the money.
Also you have the ability with most registrars to change the ownership information through a control panel, once he pays you simply do this and change the username and password to a generic one and give it to him/her.

I am also interested in this topic. I'm in the process of buy the rights of a domain name from an individual. He has registered his domain name with Register.com. I want to buy it, but I don't want to use Register.com I want to use someone cheaper. Perhaps gkg.net.
How would I go about getting this done?
When he sells it to me, what do I do from there? How do I get my name in the contact information where he currrently has his infromation. And how do I transfer the domain name to GKG.net from Register.com?
Thanks.

It really does depend on which registrar the domain name is registered with. For instance, with NSI (unless they've changed the procedure), there are a bunch of forms to fill out and a $119 charge.
With registrars like the Open SRS RSP's it would be done by changing the registrant (no charge) and then transferring the domain to a temporary profile (one where both the old owner and the new had access). From there, the new owner would either change the password or move it to an entirely different profile, one the old owner was unaware of.
I suppose it would work similarly for other registrars that have a similar online system.

I dont want my domain being transfered without recieving the paymentIt's probably not worth it unless you're talking about a significant amount of money for the sale, but if your concern is not transferring without getting paid, and the buyer doesn't want to pay you first either, you could use an escrow service. Basically, they'd hold the money until the transfer is complete, and then they'd take a percentage in return for that service.
There are a lot of them. Here's one I know nothing about except that they have a pretty informative page describing the service: http://www.domainmart.com/transfer/transfer.html
There may be cheaper companies, but these guys would charge you $250, or 1% of the sale price if it's over $25,000. So, like I said, it's not really worthwhile unless you're getting a lot of money for the domain name.

hm... I've done it before .. and it was a pain. The domain was registered by somebody who was no longer with the company and registered through network solutions. We had to send all kind of paperwork for them to start transfering the domain to a new administrative contact. We sent them a letter from our CEO using company's letter head, a copy of business' license, etc..
All I can say is ... just be patience... :)

I forgot to add earlier that if it is registered with NSI, it would be smarter, faster and cheaper to transfer to another registrar first, one like Open SRS where changes can be made instantly to the registrant.
I would get a signed and notarized bill of sale for the domain name (it could help if there are any snafus later), and make sure there was no way to cancel the payment. If it was a large enough amount, I would ask for a cashier check or wire transfer rather than a credit card.
Register.com though is probably going to be one of the best ones you will work with though....
