View Full Version : How much are you paying for Internet connection at home?
determinist 06-02-2001, 05:30 PM How much are you paying for the Internet Connection at home? and what's the speed?
I'm paying around US$40+/month for a unlimited cable connection, it come with a SURFBoard cable modem after a paying small setup fees. My ISP make no big compromises for it's speed (they only stated, faster then 56k) but it had been far from that, alot of times it goes beyond 300kps when download or uploading files.. i find it a pretty good deal.. no complains..
Previously, around 2 years ago, i was on dial-up and had always exceeded the time allowance for the plan, remember once i've topped 150 hours and it cost $200+ for that single month.
How about yours?

I am on my second day using DSL. My local phone company gets $40 for the DSL line, and my ISP gets $20 for internet stuff. A total of $60 per month.
So far, my peak download speed has been 144 kBytes per second.
John_rwx 06-02-2001, 05:43 PM About a month from now I hope to be using a BellSouth DSL line at $45/month. For now, still on dial-up at $20/month. I am VERY interested in what kind of speed DSL will bring.
(SH)Saeed 06-02-2001, 06:38 PM I'm currently in Sweden and on a 2Mbit full duplex line. This is totally free at the moment since the ISP is supposed to provide 10Mbit, but they ran out of fiber cable and had to install copper instead. They are upgrading to fiber, so I will be paying about $20 USD/month for the 10Mbit.
The highest speed I ever gotten on this line has been 230kbytes/sec. A friend of mine on a 10Mbit has come up to about 700kbytes/sec.
How's the speed in USA? I will probably be moving up to North California in a couple of months.
Dogma 06-02-2001, 07:27 PM Yay!! I just upgraded to a 56k it is *VERY* fast. And the best since 28k!!!
I absolutly recommend it to anyone. I get *UNLIMITED* for $12 and I peak at about 40k. It is amazing.
I can even download songs on Napster at up to 3kps!!
:bawling: Me and my 56k :bawling:
Walter 06-02-2001, 07:31 PM I'm in Austria and on a 512kbit/s ADSL line (512 down, 64 up) with 1GB traffic included I pay about 30$ / mo.
Jedito 06-02-2001, 07:49 PM I don't pay my ADSL, but the speed is a piece of ****
Jason_Berresford 06-02-2001, 08:05 PM I pay $0.00, but normally is $36.00 CDN (so.. about $20.00US/month)
2.0 Meg Download, 356kb/sec Upload

It depends on the distance from your location to the nearest switching center. I have ADSL with Bell South and out of the maximum of 1.5 mbps downstream, I get 1.472. Two friends of mine get less than 1 mbps.
My dial up connection is either at 49, 333 or 50, 666 bps, out of a maximum of 53k.
If you have a second line for Internet access and were thinking of dropping it, you may want to reconsider, at least for a while. There have been periods of great unreliability with ADSL when it was necessary to revert to dial up (it was out a solid week last month when they were doing line upgrades) and it will likely go out from time to time.
Planet Z 06-02-2001, 08:36 PM Duster: I've had to use a dialup numerous times with my BS DSL (out of Miami, as well). Although lately I haven't had any problems ('cept a quick outage here and there). I've been told the new DSL (with the logins, etc.) is more problematic than the original one (I first got BellSouth's DSL about 2 years ago).
I get around 1-1.4 mbps, but I'm only about 2,000 feet from the CO.
alpha 06-02-2001, 08:51 PM $50 from Time Warner... Road Runner Cable!
i get pretty good speeds, especially when Im downloading from a fast source...
it really all depends on who you are downloading from, the fastest i've gotten was a bit over 300kbytes/s :)
About $36US ($72.95 for the Aussies) for cable...... Not too bad, speed's fine and reliability is ok apart from occasional dropouts and idiotic service times by Telstra staff....
TheComputerGuy 06-03-2001, 09:27 AM I use netzero, and bluelight, juno. I use netzero up, then bluelight, then juno....
Since I havent hit the gold mine in hosting yet, but I plan, to, I live about 1 mile from my connection and it says i am close enough to get service? do you think that is good speed there? 40 dollars from bell south and 200 for a modem....??? I dont want any of that ADSL mess...do i have a choice,
I want to be able to get 300k easy, or at least 100k....
I got some sites I want to download off...
Craig 06-03-2001, 09:42 AM I pay £40 per month for ISDN + £15 per month for my isp Btinternet.

TheComputerGuy 06-03-2001, 04:23 PM well for 60 dollars you can get this stuff by satalite and it is 3 times faster than a 56k but it only upploads at 56k
it sucks but better than being slow..

Hey, at least you don't live in Ireland. For a 64k ISDN link, I would have to pay roughly £800 per month.
Racin' Rob 06-03-2001, 09:07 PM I have a 2Mbps dsl connection with unlimited traffic for $40 Canadian per month. However, we are not allowed to run any server services like http, ftp, irc etc..
 cheers
Scott 06-03-2001, 10:47 PM $23.00 a month for a painfully slow 56K connection, would get DSL or Cable but plan on relocating in the next month or so.
YaPagalDil 06-03-2001, 11:05 PM i pay $30 for my cable connection from Cox. Never got beyoung 140kbs and i am on their high end. Imagine about the low end users. lol
There serverice was down for a while in december but after that they have managed a lot. What i heard from them they got access to oc3 near where i live but havn't seen any improvment yet.
bottom line people will always pay more when their is nobody to stop them and check on them..!!!!
56K never paid a penny. lol
ONE THING DSL TOTALLY SUCKS.... never get it unless u have tooo.
Ericd 06-03-2001, 11:10 PM And why does DSL sucks
YaPagalDil 06-03-2001, 11:14 PM it susks because used it for 2 months and it was like hell trying to configure it and trying to keep it alive and then i gave up. Even though i was pay $50/month for it. and paid $100 for the modem.
Cable was much easier to install and i saved more in then i did on DSL.
Ericd 06-03-2001, 11:18 PM Sure cable is easier to install, but when i had it i was getting speed like my 56k, when it worked. Now i have StarChoice as digital TV provider, and 56k as internet. I'll never ever go back to cable, wheter for TV or internet. Should be getting ADSL within 2 months too.
Cheers!
Dylan 06-03-2001, 11:38 PM You are so lucky you pay a flat rate.
Down here you pay per second during the day.
At night I've managed to secure a flat rate per call.
Don't ask me how much, you'll have a heart attack.
It's no wonder I can't even write myself a salary at the end of the month :bawling:
(SH)Saeed 06-03-2001, 11:50 PM A few months ago I was using 56k modem and had to pay normal phone rates for my Internet connection, which then was about $1 USD/hour. My monthly phone/Internet bill would easily come up to about $150USD/month. :bawling: But the broadband connection is awesome now, makes me not wanna move to USA. :D
drhonk 06-03-2001, 11:52 PM I pay $80 a month .. for a full 1.5Mb .. and a subnet of 8 ..
