View Full Version : Game Server Questions

Hey Everyone,

I had gotten a box with RackShack just to fool around with. I decided that I'd put Counter Strike on it. Anyway, on to my questions.

1. I get pings around 40ms to the server and 40-80ms in game. The pings are fairly stable, until over 8 people go in. They start spiking to around 150ms and sometimes higher. According to the MRTG graphs, when the server is full(16/16) it uses about 400k out and 300k in. I can't figure out what is causing the spikes. No high ping players, server load sits around 0.20, the only thing I can think of is that I was put on a router/switch with a bandwidth hog. Any ideas of what I could do to prevent this. Maybe some tweaks?

2. About every 40 minutes, hlds just freezes. Everyone gets that "Error: Connection Problem", and then they are disconnected. Once again, when that happens, the load is at 0.20 or lower. mp_timelimit is set to 0. Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

If anyone could help me, I'd truly appreciate it.

http://www.rackshack.net/bw103/64.246.11.252_121.html <-- MRTG graphs according to that I have a 12.5mbps cap, which is for the whole switch?

Also, I've got their 1GHz Duron with 512megs of RAM

Hey atjeu,

Not that I know of, I just edited my message with a link to the MRTG stats page. The highest I've been able to get was 1.08 mbps when dling from another server. I can get upto 4mbps on my box that I have with webreseller.net :-/.

those are fairly normal looking graphs for a game server... 5 min avg though is not good. Is your nic in half duplex mode, is it a 10mb nic? whats your server load when 16 people are in and playing.

According to that you have a 12.5MBps limit = 100Mbps.

that would just confirm he has a 100mbit nic.

I ran a gameserver on a rackshack linux box and well it was just garbage. It was the only thing running on a p4 1.7ghz 512 ram server and it couldn't even hold 16 players! Load was never above 0.20 yet people was having spiking pings of 250+ or more. Tryed getting RS to check out the nic or something and they said everything was fine so I said good riddance to the rs and now have one at DedicatedNOW and it doesn't lag at all.

Hey atjeu,

I'm not really experienced with the configuration of NIC cards in Linux. Where would I go to check that? I vaguely remember reading something on these forums a while back about that.

Do you have any type of Instant Messenger?

VeZoZ,

I had actually planed on going with DedicatedNow, but RackShack had a $1.00 setup fee :-p. I just got this box to play around with, and was wanting to make it somewhat useful, so I installed CS on it. I'm hoping that it is a software problem that I can fix :-/

run mii-tool at the command prompt, it will tell you if its in full or half duplex mode - email for the other info you requested.

Hey,

This is what I got when I tried to run mii-tool :-/. I also just sent an email to sales@atjeu.com.

[root@ensim /]# mii-tool
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth0' failed: Operation not supported
no MII interfaces found

Hey,

Anyone know why I can't run mii-tool? It's in /sbin, but when I run it, I keep getting that error. :-/

Thanks in advance

I used to run a 20 player UT server on a P4 RS box and experienced extreme lag when 16 + people joined. It was unbearable when the game was full.
