Ok, I'm not here to flame or anything else, just tell the facts as they are.

I'll start off by saying I unfortunately believed the hype of how good their deals were on servers before I found this discussion board. I paid $3500 for a P633 with 512 mb of ram and a 20 GB Eide HD. This was 2 months ago. This was my own fault, I take the blame for it, but anyone that knows hardware knows I took the shaft here. Again, my own fault, I should have searched around.

Now for the juicy stuff. My server with them is currently down and has been for the past 16 hours. My server was down 4 days ago for 2 days. Both of these outages were because of storms. I quote from their website:
Our backup systems are among the strongest in the industry with dual power grids, Diesel backup generators and UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), all contributing to over a 99.9% uptime.

Where are these backups when I need them? And 99.9% uptime? Try 75% uptime in a good month.

My server was also down a month ago for 3 days while they were "moving the racks around". HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MOVE A RACK?!?!?!

When I ordered my server I got FreeBSD installed on it because I believe it to be better than RedHat. Opinions will vary, but that's not the important part here. They setup the main partition with 35 mb of space on it. This was for all the logs, any extra software I wanted to add , etc. It took 2 reinstalls to finally get it close to what I wanted. They also couldn't figure out how to give me permission over my own IPs, which was more downtime because I couldn't bind the hosts. Numerous other issues with their incompetant tech support raised problems.

Also, when I started my negotiations with them for my server, I specificially said I wanted a dual processor machine. Somehow in the rush to get things moving along because I needed another server badly, I didn't realize that the sales rep only put it as a single processor. My fault, I admit, but still annoying. It also took over a week to get setup when it was supposed to be in under 3 days. When I started the negotiations also I was supposed to be given 100 GB of bandwidth per month and at the end only ended up with 40 GB as that was their new policy.

I can't tell you how many other frustrating things have happened in my 2 months with them, as there are too many to remember. Yes, they are very cheap, but with other providers out there who care about their customers, are they worth it? Draw your own conclusions.

Yep... I forgot to mention also that they have 9-5 tech support hours for the most part. If you're really luck you'll be able to reach someone there on the weekeds or up to 9 p.m. weekdays, but most of the time even during their 9-5 hours it's impossible to get through to anyone. I left a message once and it took 3 days for them to get back to me. I wasn't there when they called and the process started all over again. What kind of IPP has 9-5 hours? Maybe that's why my server has been down nearly 24 hours straight at this point *sigh*. I'm calling today to see if I can get out of my contract and have my server shipped elsewhere, wish me luck!

It's a shame you've had such problems with catalog... Overall I've had a rather positive experience with them.

Had my server since october. After bouncing a few emails to them asking questions I signed up. They even installed redhat 7 and 2 days later went back and installed 6.2 when some of our software didn't work with 7. Free of charge btw!

Our last uptimes was over 60 days. If it wasn't for the noc loosing power it would still be counting away. Overall our system uptime average is around 30-40 days...

Tech support has always been helpful although a bit slow lately. Even when I send nasty letters they have always responding nicely.

Other than some network problems they've been a good host. Infact back around november/december when the @home link was becoming a pain in the butt and always going out, after complaining they gave us a free month of hosting!

Like I said it's a shame some have problems but it is only fair to hear the good with the bad IMO...

you've got to be kidding! first you pay more then u should have for your box the they lost their network connection for days and you wonder why i bolted from them over 4 months ago :) the first most states have laws agaist over charging that way and second it seens to me they already broke that contract you spoke of, by not being able to uphold their end of the contract-even if it is for x amount of days. providers like this make it bad for the solid and good providers! may the force be with you on your search for a new provider! lol

We also have nothing but good things to say about catalog.com's dedicated technical support.

Overall, our experience with them is pretty good, though the network is somewhat erratic again! It always happens when they have their *specials* and everybody decides to jump the gun and get servers at catalog that is why everytime they have their specials on dedicated servers, we always turn ON our backup server at HopeOne/Superb.net and be on the lookout for network downtimes, etc.... in case the main network goes down or slows down/gets saturated with all these new sign ups/servers.

Like what Dexter said, back in october was really bad when we were at the @home  network, the network was sooo unreliable but that was back then :)

I think they've improved now BUT then again with these new signups and $140 servers, tech support is again slow.

cheers,

How can anyone have good things to say about a company that lets your server go down for days straight? I don't see how this is possible, you make money from your dedicated server, when it's down you lose money, you lose return visitors, etc. At most places your server will never be down for more than an hour regardless, so telling people that you're pleased with catalog just doesn't fit. I know that when I'm looking to purchase a dedicated server or whatever, I like to know the facts. The facts are the network is anything but reliable and the tech support are slow. There are places selling dedicated servers for cheaper that have a better network and better tech support. I'd much rather have small problems here and there than my server being down for days straight. For anyone that thinks that having your server down for such a long period of with tech support not fixing it that think this is normal, I suggest you shop around. I'm planning on getting a server at site5 due to the lousy service at catalog, is there anyone that is saying things like "I'm pleased with site5" even though their server is up 75% of the time like the people saying good things about catalog.com? I need the cold hard facts here, I've already thrown away, and I do mean thrown away, $5,000 on catalog.com. My server on there is going to be idle for the next 9 months because there's nothing I can do with a server that's not reliable.
