From time to time there are discussions which backup method should be used, out of curiosity I started this poll for all dedicated owners and big hosts. About the options: no, RAID is no backup method.
Discussion welcomed!

i think you need to have network backup in there.

I'm missing network backup too... BTW ... could you pls tell how ISPs deal with traffic? I've heard that some of them do NOT count any bandwith, if you just copy files from one server to another, if they are inside the same noc. Is this true?

I discovered early in my dedicated server life that I need a reliable backup system.

I use multiple tapes for a weekly backup, rotating the tapes. I think I have 4 or 5 tapes...so that I have a month backed up at a time.

Now the problem is....I need the latest tape data to restore some lost data on my server from an apache recompiling we did last night. And, being sysadmin-challenged I am now desparately looking for help to tell me how to get the data off my tape....and back onto my server in the right folders.

:D

Atleast I'm not paniced that the data is lost...but I'm frustrated that it is one more thing I need help with and can't find someone to tell me where to get the information to access the tape.

PS..do you think I can get "sysadmin challenged" status proclaimed as a disability? Or do you think my little old lady status works for this? ;)

Hello,

I have a 2u server with (6) SCSI Swap Trays.

I setup a RAID 5 on (5) Hard drives, and (1) hard drive (which is the 6th) for backup.

Any problem?

That would be the recovery part of your backup and recovery plan ;)

I am completely sysadmin challenged too, but will be launching a dedicated server next month and can only afford a cheap solutions first up (1 x IDE HDD) :(

However, I will develop a backup and recovery plan and test it during the two weeks of testing/config time I'm allowing before the server will go live. What exactly that plan will be I don't know just yet :D Due to my ignorance on the subject I will have to research it. Anyone got any tips?

Yes, That would be the recovery part of my backup and recovery plan. I'm not sure that for *me* I am capable of learning sysadmin like I need. I'm at that point...where I have so much new stuff rattling around in my head that all the new stuff falls right out and onto the floor.

I call it.... feeling stupid. (And this from a gal who graduated at the top of her class of 650 classmates MANY years ago. ;) )

I love to learn...but I think I've outlived my ability to learn new tricks.

Brain overload. I need help. The hardest part is that I can't seem to find someone I can depend on...to do sysadmin. I'm at a place where I can hire, but hiring someone who is dependable and trustworthy....is a difficult task.

Until then, I'm patching things together with help here and there...but would rather find *one* person who I could email and say...need this, add it to my bill and know that it would be taken care of within a reasonable amount of time.
